Bigg T Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 After 5 years of searching for the right J-60, I finally found the right one. It is a '92 in excellent condition. I would rate it 9.5/10 even though it is almost legal (21) ;-). I really don't get why these dreads were not more popular. No, it is not a Gibson signature slope, but man can she sing. She is loud, clear, responsive with great resonance and harmonics. These are really good guitars. I love the modified V neck. It fits like it was custom made for my hand. I never thought I would find a Gibson that I would like to play more than my AJ...I am an insufferable rosewood guy and there must be a Western Classic in my future. This one just has a depth of voice that is hard to resist. Pics to follow.
JuanCarlosVejar Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 BT, they had one as the 2013 Mussikmesse : there is more photos of the musikmesse on the gibson acoustic facebook page JC
onewilyfool Posted April 14, 2013 Posted April 14, 2013 IMHO, I think the J-60 was Gibson's answer to the Martin D-28, from what I understand.....I've seen them on Craig's list for $800 to 1100 and I just never had the gold to buy one, or I would have!!!! I've played one, a "Bonecrusher" in Rosewood that was a great guitar!!! I think they are underrated and underpriced....great deal!

It has a sound all its own. I could not be more pleased. They are well worth saving some coin for. Now only if I could find one with walnut back/sides.
MissouriPicker Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 I got a J60 in January from a forum member. Absolutely awesome guitar. More volume than I expected, and I expected a lot. In all sincerity, it does look more like a Martin dread than a Gibson dread, but it's louder than a Martin dread. Mine's rosewood and aside from the volume, the note separation is actually stunning. Very clear and precise. No muddiness in this monster. Just a roar...........One more thing........only Gibson would name a guitar "The Bonecrusher" and put it in a case with a pink lining...LOL......An awesome instrument.
Motherofpearl Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 I had one with walnut still waiting to get it back! The guy I traded it to has an itch just like everyone else! Great guitars no doubt! The walnut J60 was one ill never forget! Beautiful tone
zombywoof Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 I believe it was somebody here who once described the J-60 as a pissed off AJ or something. These were originally dubbed the Bluegrass Special so it is no secret what audience Gibson was going after.
Motherofpearl Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 They are a hybrid between a Martin and gibson. They also have very fast necks.
MissouriPicker Posted April 15, 2013 Posted April 15, 2013 Amen to everything being said about the J60.. One more thing----Even if you're surrounded by banjos, you WILL be heard.
Bigg T Posted April 20, 2013 Author Posted April 20, 2013 I changed strings yesterday from lights to mediums AND replaced the original bridge pins with fossilized mammoth ivory pins...HOLY COW!!! They gave the J-60 more of everything, more volume, more sustain, greater harmonics, and perhaps best of all, fatter tone. These are truly great guitars and it just got better. I have heard that a few 5 star Gibson dealers have new J-60's. Can anyone confirm this? I am so pleased with my rosewood version that eventually I would like to add walnut and maple versions to the collection. If any one hears of a walnut available please let me know.
PickitPaul Posted April 20, 2013 Posted April 20, 2013 '95 burst, not too many bursts made as i understand. Powerful sounding, especially since i put Martin Tony Rice Monel Steel strings.
Motherofpearl Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 There was only 12 walnut J60s in both 1995 and 2005.
