Counterfeiters

Hello!

Yesterday, I was browsing through the most popular instrument ad site and bumped into something suspicious.

A brand-new "Gibson Les Paul" was offered for sale, for like 250 USD...

I sent the seller an instant message, asking for the serial number "for verification", and more detailed photos.

No reply yet...and the ad disappeared overnight.

I hate this. We had counterfeits or - if You like - clones/copies for sale for long, but in most of the cases it was made clear the instrument offered is a clone. Now this...

Cheers... Bence

Hehe!

What can be a better sign of a guilty conscience, that without replying She removed the ad from the site.

I think, asking questions in such cases is the best weapon against these criminals.

Cheers... Bence

Hello Pippy!

I don't know.

It made me upset. Anyone who is selling a new Gibson for pennies, is either a fraud or an idiot...

So I sent Her a message...obviously, She got afraid of the "verification by serial number" and ran away.

Copies are all-over, since eternity, but telling it's real when it's not is a criminal offense. I don't have issues with copies, if the seller is honest. How many of the - now reputable - makers started the business by copying Gibsons, Fenders? Many.

I will keep my eye open at that site. It's the second time like this. In the first case, I simply told the seller, that His act is against the law. It worked then too.

Cheers... Bence

I dont think the flow of fakes merging with real gibsons will slow down any time soon. Not with all these chinese distributor websites that make it so easy to get hold of them straight from the factories. I don't understand why the police haven't removed these websites yet.

At least with the Gibby you looked at you noticed there was something suspicious about the low price. If it was priced higher I would bet that a lot more people would fall for it.

Really? After the events of yesterday the fact that someone makes a replica of a certain guitar seems totally insignificant.

[rolleyes] We can be both upset at someone passing off a fake as genuine and be upset at terrorists.

Yep, them too.

Those responsible should have their skin stripped from their bodies.

Boiled in oil would be a fitting punishment.

Ask yourself what police are going to do that? There is no crime from the point of view of the Chinese police and the US' have no power to enforce their laws upon other nations. The design is in-protectable and the logo is not recognised as a trademark in China. In fact, until this guitar crosses the border in to the US no crime has been comitted at all. The only possible recourse for enforcement is against those reselling the guitars outside China.

The Chinese have been ripping off western designs for at least 60 years. Why stop something so profitable for them? My dad was a printer and told me of a Chinese copy of a press that had the same exact design flaw as an American model since they copied it part-by-part.

Call me mean but, Social Darwinism?

If you're happy with your $250 Gibbie then good for you. I'd be sad if they ordered it and the item never came, but if it comes and then, *shock, it isn't a REAL Gibbie...well, its called homework. Dumb folk will allow themselves to be screwed over in the end. It explains the, "plant not for human consumption" warning on my new violets. *shakes head Who would ever eat violets...unless they're like 3 (or a dog) and then they can't read, for kristsakes!

A girl from Nigeria told me in her country people die of malaria because the drugs sold (3-7 quinine tabs is all you need) are fake and contain only a small percentage of the medication. Thank God most of us have access to real medicines. If fake meds in reputable pharmacies were an issue, I'd lose my mind.

A guitar is a luxury, unless you're a street performer or pro muscician. If you have internet access and the cash to spend on a guitar, even a cheap one, you have the time to research. If you don't care and just "trust" the ads, chances are you're not a guitar lover/player. I'd feel sorry for a gramma who just wanted to do something nice for her grankid, but most of them are smart enough to just hand over cash and say, "Here, baby. Get yourself a nice git-fiddle with this." Grammas are wise.
