Another serial number question, with a twist..

Hi,

I am trying to help a friend out with his "interesting" guitar. First of all, he bought this guitar at auction from a radio station here in NH. back in 1989. The guitar is a black Les Paul custom, I'd say a 9 out of 10 condition. It's got patina on the pick-up covers and bridge (from playing). Anyways, it's signed by each memeber of the Cult and Ace Freley. He also has a 8x10 that he took at a concert of Ace playing the guitar before he bought it. My friend then bought the guitar and brought it to Ace to to have him sign it. At first the guitar was purchased with just the Cult signatures, then Ace signed it after. Also, Ace signed the 8x10 with the guitar in it. From the serial number, I believe it's an 1981. Can anyone confirm this? The number is: 81608568. Thanks for any help.

First and fifth digits are the year, not the first two.

88. first number is the first of the last two digits of the year and the fourth number is the last number in the date. the three numbers in between are the day of that year it was made.
