Project J-40

I thought some of you may be interested in watching along as I rebuild this J-40. It has turned into a bit of a larger project than I thought so I figured I would take photos and document what I am doing.

I started a thread down in the Repair and Restoration section where I will be documenting this project.

Hope you enjoy.

Yea I have seen davey4557's videos, He is quite entertaining. He does some things pretty unconventional but he seems to enjoy himself and he gets the job done.

A question for anyone that knows...

I have never run into a pin-less bridge before and have no idea how they compare to a regular bridge with pins. I know they made the J-40 with both bridges and have been considering installing a regular bridge on this guitar. Mainly because this bridge has been removed before and who ever did it pulled some of the wood out just beyond the outside of the bridge. I am thinking of making a slightly oversized bridge to cover repair I had to do.

Anyone know anything about the pin-less bridge?

I(f I recall those bridges were similar to what you found on Ovations. I don't much about pinless bridges - the only guitar I own with one is a Harmony Sovereign and it seems fine. I would imagine though you had better make sure there is one heck of a good glue joint if you put a pinless bridge back on.

Thanks for the info zombywoof, I know not very many guitars use them so I guess that says something right there...

I was actually wondering about the sound quality between the two as opposed to strength. This has bolts and if I do decide to use this one I will use hot hide glue which is what I usually use for bridges and braces.

Anyone else know about the sound difference between pin-less and pinned bridges?

The pin-less bridges just seem to be a variation on the classical guitar bridge. It works on a classical, in part because the string tension is substantially lower, The loading on the bridge and top would be quite different from a pin bridge, for sure, since it puts all the string load in shear, straight onto the bridge/top glue joint. The strings are doing their best to rip the bridge off the guitar.

Personally, if they used both bridge types, I would go for a conventional pin bridge. There's probably a reason you don't see many pin-less bridges on steel-string flat tops.

lowdens and takamines are two that i know of , very different noises from those two .

i have a 'lowden' that was built inthe lowden factory but without the famous lowden headstock for obvious reasons... and the guy that it was built for asked the lutheir to make it with bridge pins as opposed to their famous pinless bridge design , i honestly dont think anyone could notice a difference in sound to it and others that friends have with pinless bridge.

Thanks for the info guys,

I think I will replace the pin-less with a regular bridge. I don't have any rosewood at the moment but I do have a really nice block of ebony that I think would be great for this build. I like the sound of an ebony bridge with a maple bridge plate and also think it would look great with the plans I have for this one.

If anyone is interested I have updated the build thread with a few more posts. I just finished doing a nice scallop job on the double X bracing on it. The tone sound a lot better (I tap tuned it as I scalloped the braces).

For those of you that are lazy...
