JAddison Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 Has anyone noticed what looks like dark laquer marks on the fretboards of recent models? You can only really see it when you hold the guitar so that the fretboard is directly under light and it looks shiny. I have it all of the way down my LG2 fretboard. At first I thought it might have just been something spilt on it but I noticed it on some different models in my local shop. I asked them what it was and they said it is possibly from the machinery used to cut the wood.
j45nick Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 Any chance of a photo of this? It's hard to visualize from your description.
Triumph1050 Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 I have the exact same thing on my 2013 J-45 60s Reissue neck. All the way down tbe middle of the neck and only visible held at a certain angle. Its not uniform and while shiny I doubt its lacquer or any substance. Looks like a saw or sanding burn. Sorry dont have a pic online to post.
GuitarLight Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 I had this exact thing on my Gibson Woody Guthrie...the fret board looked part varnished (shiny) and part raw, very unsightly. Big mistake.
modoc_333 Posted April 22, 2013 Posted April 22, 2013 could it just be that piece of wood? depending on how the grain runs, you can find naturally smooth places in wood which will appear to be more shiny than areas showing more grain.
fortyearspickn Posted April 22, 2013 Posted April 22, 2013 I had this exact thing on my Gibson Woody Guthrie...the fret board looked part varnished (shiny) and part raw, very unsightly. Big mistake. Wowsers! Sounds horrible. Uhm, why did you buy it then? Maybe you should stick to Epiphones. You seem to have much better luck with them.
ParlourMan Posted April 22, 2013 Posted April 22, 2013 I have three spots like this on the fretboard of my Keb Mo, I originally assumed it was drops of lacquer that had bled on to the board... they were noticeable if you went looking for them, but not instantly seen when looking at the board. I did assume it was just a sloppy bit of finishing, but they are indeed very shiny like saw burn... now on to the good news, a year or more of playing the bugger and it's not an issue... they've blended well with the signs of fretboard usage... Didn't someone say recently they replaced some machine at Bozeman that was doing some cutting, perhaps this is the one.....
