Steve R Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 I recently picked up a '70s Japanese ES335 copy, spent some time and money upgrading the electrics, CTS pots, Switchcraft switch & jack, paper/oil caps and treble bleeds. I love the way it turned out but I can't help feeling it would be even better with mellower pickups. The ones in are some high output (11K+) generic things the previous owner got from Ebay, although the tone is great the sound is a bit harsh, if you know what I mean. Ideally I'm probably looking for pickups somewhere around 8K, I looked at Gibson 57s but modern sets come with the bridge a lot hotter than the neck, that wasn't the case with early 335s (which is what I'm aiming for), both were more or less the same. Anybody got any suggestions?
Jon S. Posted April 19, 2013 Posted April 19, 2013 I would recommend a '57 Classic in both positions(or a '57 Classic Plus in the bridge for a little more output). Both very warm and around 8.5k.
