A few questions

Hey Guys, this is my first Post. I am glad I found this forum, I have been lurking here for some time now. I have been away from playing for a couple of decades, and I now am 46 years old and I have the passion back like I have never before. Let me first preface by saying I wasnt the best acoustic musician before. I was and am honestly ,kind of a hack. I hate to ask a question of you guys on my first post, but I know there are some talented musicians out there so I guess I will try...

I know most of the chords and I have a basic idea of theory. I havent really developed my "ear" yet. I know sometimes that comes with time. I also know it is easier for some than others.. I want to and I am currently learning a lot of tunes, acoustic stuff, some stones, Dylan, Lumineers etc.. Remembering them, does not come easy.

My question, what methods do you guys have for remembering like 10-15 songs or a whole set.

I want ot be able to sit down and play the music and songs I have learned without having to get out my binder with the chords written down, or pull up You tube.

Get what I am asking guys?

thanks in Advance... So glad to be here!!

Well, there are a bunch of guys here who are in their 50's and 60's. They won't remember how they remember songs. The younger guys still have functioning synapses and can actually get through a bunch of songs by memory.

Repetition, however, is the mother of retention.

Hi and welcome to the forums... [biggrin]

Open mic events are becoming very popular...

Most performers, including moi, take their lyrics/chords + stand onstage

IMX too much home practice can make the transition more difficult

And as mentioned...repetition makes perfect... [thumbup]

Well, I'm in my mid 50s. When it comes to lyrics, I try to remember the story. I always write down the words then try to recall them in my head verse by verse. As long as I remember the first couple of words of a verse, the rest usually comes. As for chords, I have to run through songs that I haven't done in a while to bring back the chord memory. Sometimes I have to go back to my song files to see what the chords are. If you are going to do a set someplace, then just run through all the tunes until you have them all down and can do them without the sheets. It's much more fun to play songs when you don't have to stare at a piece of paper.

thanks Guys.

I do appreciate it. I just have a hard time I will learn ann Acoustic tune, and then go to come back to it in a couple of weeks after practicing and learning a few others, and it completely escapes me.

Practice, Practice and more Practice.

thanks again

Just use the charts until you no longer need to.

Eventually, you'll remember things without the need for the chart.

as you learn more songs, repeat..

jedzep nails it. Repetition, is the mother of retention.

Hi and welcome. I find what works for me is repetition is the key. I also use the charts for a song that I have not played in a long time, but it usually comes back rather quickly. Good luck.
