brc Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 I love the sound of a nice 12 string whether it acoustic or electric. Had a nice Ricky back in the early 70s that I still kick myself in the arse for selling. But the question I have is, with all of the different pedals on the market now, has any one heard or know of a pedal that will turn a 6 string into a 12 string? I am not an electrical whiz, < I do know my way around electrics enough to get me into trouble> but it does not seem like it would be that difficult. Is there such a pedal on the market now? thanks
milod Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 There are pedals, and settings on multi-effect pedals, that claim to emulate a 12-string. IMHO it's not likely to come as close to "real" as most other effects. On my multi-box, I think it sounds horrid and not at all an emulation of a 12-string, but at best a caricature of one. The problem is that the top two courses of strings are unison on a 12-string and the lower four courses are in octaves. If one tries to get octaves on each pitch played, you can add some interesting overtones that to me just sound muddy as if other effects are jammed together to sound like an old analog radio with a poorly tuned AM station. I think a degree of 12-string emulation is possible with individual piezos under each saddle of a six-string and then individual enhancement of the signal from that saddle. This has been done with varying degrees of success with various solidbody guitars. Me? I think you're better off spending a cupla hundred on an inexpensive AE 12 and/or adding a soundhole magnetic pup to an acoustic 12. I took the latter route myself and I think it's far more cost-effective than messing with pedals. m
Searcy Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 The pog does a good job of faking a 12 string. My Roland VGA7 also has a decent 12 string sound using a Roland pickup. I just recorded something with it a little while ago. I'll see if I still have it. Nether of these sound as good as my Alverez 12 string jumbo but if you just was the 12 string sound once in a while they will get you there.
brc Posted April 21, 2013 Author Posted April 21, 2013 Thanks for the replies. I have a couple of good acoustic 12 strings now, but really like the sound of a nice electric. I would appreciate it if you could find the recording with your pedal you are speaking about. Kind of looking for another Rickenbacker if I could find a mid to late 60s Guess I am always looking for some thing to add to my list.I sold one last Sat. but turned around and bought 3 more during the week.Starting to run out of room. anyway, thanks for the responses
Searcy Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 Here's a rough demo of the roland system. https://soundcloud.com/searcy/srvdrop It's not a pedal but a 120 watt amp with a built in synth section. They do make a stand alone floor model though.
brc Posted April 21, 2013 Author Posted April 21, 2013 Sounds great. Thats what I am looking for. Really appreciate the response and for posting. I am going to look into this for myself. thanks again
