Sold my first Gibson

So over the weekend the Songwriter finally went to a new owner.

She's been out of mind for some time and now she's permanently out of sight.

Ive had troubles bonding with this guitar since I bought her almost three years ago. Was meant to be my main gigging guitar but realised the mahogany gits, in particuar the HB TV are a better fit, I prefer the classic Gibson tone. I also had issues with the huge rosewood overtone splash and its weight. (The rosewood AJ is about half its weight and has a much more focused tone, not as splashy like the SWD)

But the good news is that she will have a new home in Ceske Budejovice, the home of the famous original Czech Budweiser (the good stuff)and will be played every Thursday night by a very good blues band in the beer city. So thats a good thing and makes me happy she will be in good hands.

However what I wanted to say is that it was a bit sad, as I never imagined I would be selling a Gibson, I mean you buy these guitars, you dont sell em, right ?

So, for those who sold Gibsons, how did you feel when you sold the first one, easy experience, a bit sentimental or already looking forward to the next one ?

cheers,

EA

Sold quite a few Gibson electrics in the past, even a vintage one, to be honest I never batted much of an eyelid about it, once I decided it was on the block, it became about the sale / money.... The three electric sales I regret most are for a Gretsch and 2 Telecasters, but I just wasn't playing electric anymore so it made sense even if I was a bit two-minded about selling.

EA, I know exactly how you feel. I sold my 1st Gibson, a 2005 J-45 "Historic" a few months ago after much angst. In truth she was not getting played much as although a very fine guitar, my new SJ was similar but better in every way & I just couldn't justify keeping both. It was a wrench selling my 1st ever Gibson, as she had opened my eyes to the unique sound that is a Giobson slope dread. The good news was that she was sold to a much deserving young lad who was off to music college & his parents wanted him to have a special guitar for that & as he is a lefty they were struggling to find a J-45 in their price range. They came to my office to view the guitar & had kept it all secret from the lad. He played it & then they told him it was his - you should have seen his reaction! Made it all worth while.

I know that feeling Lefty. It was when I bought my very first Gibson acoustic, the 69'er in New York. I could not believe I was walking out with a Gibson acoustic, I was in la la land for days ...

I can imagine how bad that must feel! My SWD hardly gets played since I got my J45TV.... I do enjoy playing it every now and again though so I doubt it will go anywhere, plus it was my first good guitar bought with some inheritance so it's sentimental if nothing else!

I gave away or traded off my first Gibsons - a 1930s L-00 and L-1. First Gibson I ever sold outright was a Reverse Firebird - the same burst model that Johnny Winter played. Having not owned any of these guitars for more than five or so years, I did not have enough history with any of them to get to me. Plus back then they were easily replaced if I ever wanted to.

The only guitar I ever let go of that caused sent me to go into a tailspin spin afterwards was a 1958 Telecaster. It had been on the road with me for decades. That guitar just held alot of memories. I think I had nightmares for about a month after I let it go.

I've traded away an ES-335 and a J-50. Can't say I miss either. The J-50 had issues and I never bonded with the 335.

My first Gibson bought was also the first one sold. I sold an SWD with a natural top to buy an SWD with a sunburst. No regrets. I don't even have the sunburst one any longer, deciding I prefer lighter weight, slope shoulder dreads.

I'd like to sell something now for some funds, but for the first time in a long while, I've scaled back to the point where I know will regret whatever I sell.

This is a collection pic from a few years back...none remain with me. I hope each one is being enjoyed by someone. No regrets. Took me a while to find out what I like.

Although I've always been a fan of old Gibsons, I did used to own a couple of modern versions - a Nick Lucas and an L-20 - that I used for touring. Both were nice enough guitars but for me neither came close to the old guitars I used at home and for recording. I eventually decided I wasn't playing out enough to justify having guitars that were only used for gigging, so moved both of them onto new homes.

I've been through a few quirky older Gibsons that were bought pretty much on a whim, and never played: an early L style with a slotted headstock, an LG-3/4, and an LG-0. I'm quite strict about not keeping guitars that just hang on the wall or sit in the wardrobe though - if I'm not using them I'd much rather they went to people who would appreciate them.

My L-1 and L-00 aren't going anywhere!

Well I am a new Gibson fan and just recently got my first one so I can't say I have parted with a Gibson. I am feeling a bit of separation anxiety over selling my Rickenbacker 360 Jetglo. I loved the sound of that guitar and it was so smooth to play. I just don't play any of my electrics much anymore so I am looking to sell some of them. Until I sold that, I have every guitar I have ever bought so it was a bit difficult to get rid of. I don't have a large collection of guitars (9 at the moment) but they all mean something to me.

So Gibson, Martin, Fender, Ric, it doesn't really matter what brand it is, If you get attached to your guitars it is always difficult.

If it is just a piece of equipment to you then it really doesn't matter.

I still think fondly of my Gibson J-30 Firebird, the first and only Gibson I sold....one of the best sounding guitars I'v owned......one of my wife's favorites.....BUT.....the bling was just too much for me. I always felt self conscious playing it in front of folks, but visually was very beautiful, and sound wise superb....went to a guy who really appreciated that .......so, no regrets!

What's next in the great plan, EA?

My guess is that after having the vintage LG2, your mind is veering towards a vintage/Banner? J45 to go with it perhaps....

I lost a lot of stuff to the local pawn shop when I was playing in bands, even some great amps, pedals and a Space Echo, even a 4 track reel - no money in my rotten bands - yeah for computer processing job!

So because of those experiences at the pawn shop, I tend to cling to my current 'crap' longer than I should.......

I traded a 1928 (ish ) wooden Dobro on my 1976 metal body Dobro - I got peanuts for the old Dobro and should have kept it just for the beautiful smell it had.....

The only Gibson I have sold so far is a 80s(ish) Les Paul Custom that must have weighed 45 pounds that tried to re-arrange my neck and spine while playing a few nights a week way back when.

BUT I am at a stage where I have quite a few little houses that I may trade up to Hotels in the near future, but it has all been a fabulous learning experience trying/finding these little houses.
