jazzpunk67
I just received my new Gibson. What a great guitar. I'm hoping this will be my last, I'm thinking of joining some 12 step program if I even look at ebay or craigslist anytime soon. The guitar is beautiful and sounds exactly like what i've wanted for a few years. It's got that j-45 sound but just a little bit deeper and more bass swell. It's light and very comfortable to play. The neck is the perfect shape and width for me. My other 12 fret martin has a wider neck and modified V shape, I still can't get used to it. The only two things I don't like about it are: Doesn't have the Wider saddle that extends across the bridge, but there's an element pickup installed so I understand the shorter saddle. The other thing is the firestripe pick guard. I love the look of it, but I don't care for the fact that you can see the adhesive through it. I never noticed that before while trying out a guitar before. Keith at Baily Brothers was easy to work with. He answered all of my questions and got the guitar sent out quickly. I took a chance on buying it without playing it, but this is not a guitar that could have been picked up just anywhere. D

jazzpunk67
I'll get some up in the next few days. I know that I have a sickness because I spent a good amount of time just looking at this guitar last night. My intention is to play the heck out of it and not keep it in the case all the time. My pattern is to get a new guitar, play it and admire it only in the practice room and play beaters everywhere else. I'm gonna change that and quit worrying about dings, scratches and resale. I coulda gotten another older guitar but getting this one and putting on the mojo on it myself is the way. And perhaps a way to cure this sickness. d

jazzpunk67
thanks for the welcomes. I've lurked here for a while but just registered to post. I've passed on other J-45's and SJ's. They all seemed ok, but lacked something. This guitar really feels and sounds good. Glad to hear that you've played it and give the vote of confidence. GotTheSilver
I know that I have a sickness because I spent a good amount of time just looking at this guitar last night. Oh, please, we have all done that here! Have you stuck your nose into the soundhole and taken a good whiff yet? My intention is to play the heck out of it and not keep it in the case all the time. My pattern is to get a new guitar, play it and admire it only in the practice room and play beaters everywhere else. I'm gonna change that and quit worrying about dings, scratches and resale. I used to worry about my guitars, but I don't any more. I play them, enjoy them, even let my 2 year old play them! If they get dinged or scratched, well that is just part of life! And, no, it will not cure the sickness! Welcome to the forum and congrats on a really cool guitar! Can't wait to see pics. I am sure she is beautiful! jazzpunk67
You guys are no help. And I haven't stuck my nose in a soundhole...... in the last hour. I'm losing grip on reality here. I don't want to admit that the first step is to admit I have a problem. I can start selling one guitar for each new guitar I get. yeah... that would work. But Dang, that new guitar smell... glue, rosewood, spruce, mahogany, etc.... I shoulda called in sick today and just played the guitar all day. ChrisM
Lovely guitar, would really like to hear it. Gotta ask though, what's with the pickguard placement? Looks even weirder than normal.
jazzpunk67
Lovely guitar, would really like to hear it. Gotta ask though, what's with the pickguard placement? Looks even weirder than normal. The guitar is great. I love the looks of it. The pickguard placement is a bit odd in placement and since it has a lot of transparent areas its more obvious and you can see a little of the adhesive in places. I've looked at tons of gibsons and noticed that more of the recent guitars have a pickguard that is applied closer to the hole and over most of the rosette. I'm guessing Gibson sees the wear on a lot of well played guitars that have wear between the hole and the pickguard so they moved it closer to the hole. On a lot of older guitars and the JB and Legend J-45 there is only a single rosette with the pickguard lined up to the rosette. I'll be working on some recordings soon. My skill does not justify owning this guitar but I'll upload clips. I must say that this guitar and my Martin HD-28VS have done wonders for advancing my playing. Both are a joy to play and offer different tones. The Martin sounds much bigger at first listen but the Gibson has such a sweetness that no Martin I've played has. Not better, just different. I do pick up this 12 fret SJ and my 67 SJ more than my Martin, Taylor, lowden or other guitars I own.

j45nick
No. This was a one-off. Keith, could you explain what the tonal quality differences, if any, would be expected from the 12-fret vs. 14-fret versions of this guitar? I'm just trying to come to grips with what is an anomolous version of the SJ. If you just say "the guy wanted a 12-fretter", that's fine, but if the person who commissioned this was after some specific quality, rather than just wanting something different from a regular SJ, I'd sort of like to know for future reference.
