Gibson SG Robot neck hairline crack.

Hello guys,

this is my first post here. I was a bit scared of what my SG neck did, so I would like to ask, whether it is serious or not... Could you tell me your experience? My guitar never fell on the floor, I treat it quite well, only temperature is not constant due to traveling with it. Other guitars of mine are ok, but this one scares me a lot :)

hmmm...the initial crack wouldn't bother me so much as that kind of finish can get some cracks from expantion and contraction etc etc and is no biggy....my only concern ( and it may just be the picture) is at the end of the neck it seems as tho the crack is bigger almost giving it an illusion of the neck lifting there....how is the other side of the neck?

.

That looks like a finish crack, typically along the fretboard/binding/neck joint caused by temperature and humidity variations. The neck joint looks good. I wouldn't worry about it, but keep an eye on it. The finish crack may continue to grow up the neck along that seam, but it should not grow in width. If it grows in width you should have your luthier/shop evaluate it.

Thanks guys for reply :) The other side looks better, but those seams are continuing even under the sixth fret, but those are much much smaller than these ones. There are no holes in it, just finish looks like as you see... Fretboard has the shape as it has before, so I did not recognize any movement, but the seams... :) Don't like it at all. I have her only for four years.

The neck is not lifting (first photo), there is only finish color which goes on the binding a bit.

Also worth mentioning: I have never ever done neck bending or stuff like that.

So may I be worried? :) I still hope that this is not fatal damage and it's just the finish issue.

I would check your neck relief or have someone check it for you. I had a similar problem up towards the tuner side and it wouldn't adjust to twelve thousands neck relief. (.012) It might be possible to keep track of it in case it gets worse by keeping an eye on your relief. And i hope this helps.

Thanks a lot :) Do you think that repair is needed? I will let it check by someone that's for sure, but I'm a bit scared of repairing.

Mine did that too. It was only 2 years old. It is just a finish crack... The neck wood and fretboard wood expand/contract differently with moisture changes. An authorized Gibson repair center phoned in and explained the crack... and the repair costs. Gibson DID approve it, since the luthier didn't charge much.

How much was the repair cost? Hope it's not 1000$ or more :)

Has it spread since you noticed it? If it were mine i would call Gibson and see what could be done. its more than a blemish. Who knows they might replace it. I have heard of stranger things happening. good luck.

I'm going to guess 100$ max... gibson footed the bill as warranty for a premature finish failure... So it only cost me a trip to the luthier.

John (luthier) has a good working relationship with Gibson, and he's very fair on billing. Therefore, since he doesn't cheat Gibson, he gets approval on most warranty repairs.

Even out of warranty fixes he's done for me were done very well, and were affordable. I've had him do set-ups/adjustments, finish work, and electronic work.

The problem is, that I'm from Czech Republic and I'm not sure where's the nearest Gibson certified luthier located :/ I don't want to give it to anybody who doesn't know how to repair Gibson properly.

Thanks :) As I wrote above, I'm from Czech Republic (Central Europe), which makes it a bit difficult. But the finish crack is still the same, no holes, no more stretching. Fingerboard is the same as before.

Neck finish is very thin on this model, much more thinner than on any other Gibson I have or I have seen.
