EbonyCanada
Hi, I'm new to the board and new to Gibson. I've always thought Les Pauls were a cut above the rest and recently got a new, never used 2009 Les Paul in ebony. So my first question is, should I stick with this '09 or should I change it for a 2012 (since 2013 models don't include ebony as an option). I'd think that for me none of the changes would matter too much to me besides the coil splitting options, but I'd rather have a truer Gibson sound than be able to have coil splitting, so how much difference would it make? And am I overlooking things that may be better/worse with the 2012 models? Secondly when I use the neck pickup I have almost no volume. I know using the rhythm setting is usually quieter, however I'm talking 'is that just the guitar or is that sound coming form my amp?' kind of quiet. It certainly doesn't seem like a noticeable but usual change in volume. The only thing that seems to have any effect in this mode is the tone control for the neck pickup. When its closed all the way there is no sound, and open all the way is the sound I described before. Any suggestions or have I got a lemon on my hands? Guest Farnsbarns
There's probably some dirt between the track and contact in the volume pot. A touch of switch cleaner will sort it but if you bought it from a dealer as new it's under warranty and gibson will fix it. With regards to model years, that's up to you. I assume you played them all before your purchase?
crazytrain513
Don't the 2012's have the assymetrical neck profile as well? Unless you're getting a killer deal, I wouldn't say it's worth your while to upgrade. Plus you'll have to deal with all those "new guitar problems" again a.k.a. binding nuts, tuning problems, bridge/stopbar heights, etc. As for your pickup issue, in addition to the dirt mentioned above, check to make sure the soldering was done properly otherwise maybe the pickup wire has come loose. This should also be covered under warranty though if you're the first owner.
EbonyCanada
Thanks I'll check out the solutions to the pickup volume.
Twang Gang
Check the height of the pickup as well (although it sounds as if the problem is extreme to be a height issue). With both the volumes and tones wide open strum the guitar and change the pickup switch. Both pickups should have equal volume.
