Smurfbird
http://www.ebay.com/itm/330914781272?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 This CF-100 caught my eye on eBay. Looks undervalued. In exc. cond. it would be worth $3750-4600. So, even if a lot has been done to it, it's not a bad value. Feel free to go ahead and rip the guitar apart. I'm no expert by any means. I've toyed with the idea of bidding on it, but then I thought I'd probably end up in a bidding war with someone here and would only end up costing that person more money. How many times you think we've bid against each other?
jedzep
One thing I know about Ebay, the final bid will end up being exactly what it's worth. The CF100 isn't really one of Gibson's great creations, more a sentimental/collector model, I think.
zombywoof
Bargains on eBay do seem to be a pipe dream nowadays. Only time make a bid is on a Make an Offer item. Generally I don't expect my offer to be accepted but I have been fooled twice now - a coffin box fiddle case and 1950s Lifton guiar case - both in much beter than usual condition. jedzep
I thought so too. Though I had to give up my LG2 to pay for it, I was shocked to see the early '30's L00 I eventually hit the BIN button on for under 2G's. I asked questions galore and looked hard for flaws and misrepresentations, hyperventilating all the way. Took a chance and got a gem. I figure it's the last lucky moment I'll ever get. onewilyfool
Look carefully...bridge has been changed note: no MOP's at the bolts which fix the bridge to top....therefore replacement bridge has no bolts. Bridge has been shaved down, usually done to avoid a neck reset. No side shots showing height of E strings above 12th fret, so no idea what action is, but shaved bridge indicates it needs a reset. . Originally a slide through saddle so bridge is not correct style either...... Also frets are pretty flat, let's assume refret. Tone and volume knobs don't look original....AND, lastly, large crack looks like it has just been filled. Proper way is to insert a sliver of spruce in the crack, glue and clamp.(see frets.com to see proper fix.....) I would not touch this guitar with a ten foot pole. Very minimal description..... Good luck if you get it...By the way I must differ with Jed about this guitar in general...I have the non-pickup CF-100...and I've played it against other CF-100's, LG-2's Martin 00-18's, etc., and it is head and shoulder's above the crowd. Apparently they used higher grade materials than the LG's, and in spite of the cut-away, they sound better to my ear than any of the LG-2's I've played. Some CF's have scalloped braces, some don't ....so sound quality varies...I like mine! Great guitars, but this one is a DOG, IMHO....
Smurfbird
Thanks, Wily. Will avoid. I've been lucky as hell. I've gotten some nice guitars at what I consider to be decent prices. Not rock bottom cheap, but fair enough. I know Gibson has some dogs out there, but either I'm insanely lucky (never have been before with anything) or Gibsons are a lot better than they're given credit for. I go for that last option. (To me, it really is a bizarro world when people LOVE Taylors for their tone and berate Gibsons for their lack of quality control. It boggles my mind.) Not really on the topic but as I play more 14 1/2" to 15 1/4" lower bout guitars I am slowly being weaned off the LG-2 Kool Aid.
tvguit
I smell finish work on this one. Avoid like the plague! (IMHO )
J-1854Me
Here's a non-E CF100 : at Folkway .... if you're interested in that sort of thing. Fred
RusRob
My all time favorite guitar (as you can tell from my avatar). I wanted one of these so bad but they are priced a bit rich for my budget. I don't actually think the sound of them is so beautiful but as far as style... the CF-100 just oozes it. Any time I look at guitars on ebay I study the pictures first and read the description last. when first looking at it I could see it had been refinished and a poor job of it at that... The description said it was done by Gibson.. Doubtful at best. I wouldn't even consider bidding on this one.
ParlourMan
Finish looks dubious to me, an the other points raised are all spot on too.... It's not one I'd take a leap of faith on. Good luck to you if you decide to go for it though.
