BobF_
OK, now that I've had it for a while I'm allowing myself to dislike something about my Ultra-339. It's the front/top strap button. Can these be safely moved to the tip of the top horn, or are they really where they are for a good reason?
Dennis G
Hey Tweed, this one has your name written all over it! Bob, member Tweed has moved the strap button on his Casino to the tip of the horn so I'm sure he'll chime in. I remember a post from a year or so ago on the Gretsch forum where a guy did this and posted detailed pics of what he did.
BobF_
That's good news! I *hate* where the designers decided to put them.
tweed2
Great memory, Dennis. Bob, here's a diagram of what I did for my Casino. I pulled the neck pickup and fed the "block" through that opening. A little glue on the curved side, then let it dry. Now if I could figure out a way to relocate the strap pin on my SG, to a more comfortable place....... tokairic
Just followed Tweed2's method of fixing a strap button to the top horn of my Ibanez AS7312 (like a 335 12 string) and it worked a treat! Took my time shaping the wood block for shape and depth so it accurately fitted inside the horn, taped the lacquer before drilling any holes, hung a weight on wire through the block while the wood glue set (didn't want to risk hanging the guitar on the wire) . One tip here is to put some polythene sheet (old plastic bag) inside the sound hole to stop getting glue anywhere except in the point of the horn when you pull in the preglued block using the wire. The plastic bag is easily positioned and removed through the sound hole. Pre drilled the button screw hole, screwed it in then removed it and ran Zap thin cyano into the threads to harden the wood (old aeromodelling trick). Found a white plastic automotive hole plug about 6mm flush (slightly domed) head diameter which fitted the old screw hole in the back of the body (looks made for it). Now the guitar hangs well on the strap and doesn't fall away from me and the strap isn't trying to detach all the time, (just like my LP but a good deal lighter). ~Can't believe that guitar companies slavishly copy old designs that don't work (in the name of tradition) re the body back strap button. Took a bit of nerve to get started and drill the new guitar body but I am certainly glad I did! Anybody thinking of doing this - just do it! (carefully!) Thanks Tweed2!
