almost NGD...my wife tried her best

My wife, who has never personally bought me anything for my guitars, tried her best to surprise me and get me a guitar that I recently told her about. Somehow she actually remembered something about it and she went into GC, probably feeling totally out of place, and tried to get it for me. But it had already been sold. :-({|= The guy told her it was a really nice guitar and the dude who bought it is a chronic returner so he would call her if he brought it back. [-o<

I saw it in Guitar Center while I went in just to browse. They did have a lot of good used gear. One guitar caught me eye that I had never seen or heard of. It wasn't something I would normally think of as my kind of guitar but something about it interested me. I took it down and was really impressed by how well it seemed to be made and how nice it played. It was called a Kokocaster. When I got home I told her about this cool guitar and looked it up online. It seemed to get a lot of high reviews. Maybe I will see another one or get this one if the guy returns it.

So anyway, my wife also remembered about a little practice amp I tried out last summer in a music store in Virginia. I pointed it out recently when I saw it featured in some commercial for another product. So she asked the guy about that amp and he said they were out of stock but could order one for her (me). So she did. [thumbup] It should be here in a few days.

Yamaha THR10

I was impressed. After more than 20 years, this was the first time she actually went to a music store and bought an actual item for me. Maybe she loves me.. [blush]

You are so lucky that your wife is finally catching on,hopefully this will be the start of an ongoing thing.A few years ago my wife got into the guitar buying groove when she went to my usual music store-without me having the slighest suspicion-and bought a beautiful Midnight Wine Tele that I`d been raving about, for me for Christmas. She has surprised me in a similar manner several times since.Let`s hope that your wife will do likewise for you-good luck.

I understand how much that means. My ex was a gamer and he was adding to his collection of nintendo and super nes games. These are rare ones, ones he's looked for for ages. I did my best to remember them and bought him many. I'd go to the flea market and spend hours sifting through junk piles. If I saw a used game shop I'd stop every time. It was worth it to see him clean it and load it and play like a friggin 6-year-old.

Part of the reason we didn't work out is he NEVER did that for me. He was awesome in many ways, but if there was ever anything I wanted to do that was not his thing he would say, "I'm not going to have fun, but I'll still come." Granted, if I pointed at something he'd buy it for me right then, but it is special when someone puts thought into a surprise. He never surprised me, ever.

Music stuff is so hard to get for someone...your wife is really nice.

That was very sweet of her especially since it sounds like she was out of her comfort zone which I completely understand. It's a little intimidating to be in a music store and not know your stuff. Speaking first hand here I'm still intimidated and like to have my daughters boyfriend go with me. I'd say yes she loves you but I'm sure you do know that. Hopefully she feels a little more comfortable now that she scored! Congrats on the new gear!

ya man,, she loves ya,,, but Sometimes the effort means way more to us than the material matter.

My wife wanted to buy me a banjo a few years ago..

she wound up buying me my first set of golf clubs instead.

and I took to the game and I play when ever I can. otho a banjo just never interested me! so here, the right choice was indeed made! [thumbup]

Yep, awesome wife. Mine bought me a guitar I had been drooling over (but not on) for our 10th. That was nearly 13 years ago. It's still my best guitar :-)

Congrats on the THR10, BTW. I don't know if you've ever tried one out or not, but they are simply amazing. I can't believe the sound that comes out of those little boxes!

They also work really, really well for recording via USB and ASIO. The Yamaha/Steinberg drivers are solid.

Oh, and you won't believe the hifi quality of the aux in ...

HNAD2U!!

Not being married I am not sure how this works. When the wife buys you an amp or a guitar is she doing it with money she earned? Or is she just spending your dough, but you don't have to go to the store and pick the item out? [tongue]

In MY case, funds have always been pooled, with unplanned, *major* purchases being discussed in advance. My Gibson would qualify as a major purchase - even moreso then.

So when one of us makes a purchase like this for the other w/o prior discussion, it's both a contribution and an establishment of priorities for the recipient above your own.

On smaller items, it's a demonstration that you're thinking of your partner.

I can tell by the way you phrased your question that you're not married. :)

Thanks all.

It's not really a money thing with her, she is just totally bored by my guitar hobby and knows nothing about it. All these years of me trying and she still doesn't know the difference between a Strat and Les Paul. [crying]

And yes I had tried the THR10 last year in a little music store near her dads house. Been intersted in maybe getting one ever since.

If you haven't looked at the link to those KokoCaster guitars, you might want to check it out too. I had never heard of GRB guitars, but I'm telling you for the money they are a real steal.

  • 2 weeks later...

Update: The guy from Guitar Center called my wife Saturday and sure enough the person who bought that GRB Kokocaster brought it back! So we went in and put a payment to hold it until I get back in later this week and pay the rest to get it. [thumbup] I'll post pics when I get it home.

So I still have the Yamaha THR10 too and have been playing my trusty LP Studio though that. I've probably played plugged-in more in the past week than I have in the last year. Even with my little Roland Blues Cube, it's too much hassle to plug everything in and try to keep it low enough not to disturb the rest of the house. This little thing sits right on my kitchen table and sounds more like an authentic tube amp than any SS modeling amp I've ever heard. Plus I can plug my Ipod into it and play along that way and even use headphones too.

The THR10 is a great practice amp Jay. I had one in my office for awhile borrowed from a buddy who broke his fretting hand and had to take a few weeks off. And hey, nice table cloth. If you steam the crabs I'll bring the Flying Dog and we'll make an afternoon of it with a little jam session afterwards! [thumbup]
