I found a 1976 Les Paul the other day and asked for a picture of the sn so I could verify the date. The seller told me the sn had been scratched off so I asked for pics. Well, the sn hadn't been scratched off, it was GOUGED out of the headstock! It was in the shape of a nice rectangle but it was about an 1/8 inch deep. the number on the pots is 1377610. the pups were replaced. He offered it to me for a really good price. Is there any other way to verify that it is a real Gibson and that it is from 1976.

Assuming it is legit, would YOU buy it?

Sounds like it might have been stolen. I can't think of any reason to gouge the serial number off. I probably wouldn't buy it, bad karma, but that just me. Also as it's altered and hot, he would have to sell it for a good price. If you can post some pics I'm sure the experts here can tell you if it's really a Gibson and how old it might be.

Not quite as accurate as to narrow it down to one year.

In '76 the LP would have a three-piece maple neck; a neck volute; no dot above the 'i' in the peghead logo and a closed 'b' and 'o' of same.

No. As others have said before, it has almost certainly been stolen at some point. Not neccessarily by the current seller but there's no way of telling either way.

Yeah, just write him back, and say: "After looking at the photos you sent, I see you're the Dweeb, that stole my guitar??!...The cops should be showing up, any minute, now!" [flapper][biggrin]

I wouldn't by it, at any price...as cjsinla said:"Bad Karma!"

....don't stop there! Then say...."listen, for the right price this can be just between the two of us..."

$250 sounds good...

Yup, its either to pass of a fake or a hot one..........as said above, no other reason to remove a serial number.

The seller may be a crook, or just caught in the middle, either way, I don't think I'd want to be part of that chain
