Izzy
I was re-reading a responce I made (buy better gear than you need) and it made me realize....I'd be one strict mama if I were to raise some chil'ens. We have a perception of who we are and there are perceptions others have of us but through our interactions with one another we can discover even more about ourselves. What have you learned about yourself because of this forum, be it because of your reaction to a topic or something that was pointed out to you by a fellow forumite. Additionally, have you created a forum persona or are you yourself entirely (with better grammar and less cussing)?

Additionally, have you created a forum persona or are you yourself entirely (with better grammar and less cussing)? Well Izzy, I've learned that I'm a lot like other folks here. People who have a common interest in guitars, stuff related to guitars and in the world in general. As for persona, I am who I am, no pretending. kidblast
Hi Izzy, intriguing post. I don't think I have any different persona here than I would normally do. I try not to push buttons, ya know? One thing I figured out about these forums, I really appreciate that the forum members are very ready willing and able to help others with questions and we seem to be a very amiable crowd. (I don't see the same if I go to other forums, of which I will leave nameless, but it's just different here.) I enjoy that we all come here for the same reason, we love music, and we love guitars. Also found out real fast that there is a lot of knowledge here, and (well at least I think) I like to be also able to offer help on things that I have a good feel for, and I definitely like the fact that you can always pick up some thing that you didn't know before. Also it's fun getting to know people from all over the world, I do love that. I work for a global company, everyone I actually "work with" is in a different time zone, so I have become very accustomed to being keen to cross cultural matters, there's a lot of that here too. /Ray
milod
I don't think anybody entirely knows another; each of us have a private inside mind that seldom, if ever emerges. It's different for each of us. Usually it's the deeper philosophical, I think, that unless one is by nature a somewhat trained or interested "philosopher," it never emerges because of a feeling that others wouldn't get it anyway. I'll reference Plato's allegory of the cave as a perfect example of how and why that's the case. I strongly recommend that everyone of "adult" age, as in perhaps age 10 or above and certainly 14 and above, read that section of Plato's Republic. To get a precis of the concept if you haven't read it and are concerned about difficulty of understanding some old ancient Greek guy, check: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allegory_of_the_Cave OTOH, I've a hunch that most long-timers here know that such "stuff" is part of me. And I definitely was raised that way by a one-time car and Harley Davidson motorcycle dealer and mechanic who ended up with a cupla degrees and teaching a bit of philosophy at the uni level. <grin> What I've learned here is in two parts. First, I've learned a lot about guitars and how others approach the instrument and music. That includes getting some good input from folks young enough to be my grandchildren, but whose minds are sufficiently open to express their perspectives on music, musicians and life in general. All of that has been very valuable, IMHO, to my own gaining of insights. Second, I've had underscored how some people cannot look at the world with a vision broader than their own horizons. That's what has brought locks to various topics. It saddens me greatly. It's also a perfect example of results as noted in Plato above. Then again, it kinda hits my own upbringing. I was trained, without knowing that I was trained at the time, to learn to take either side of an issue to argue, and to do so dispassionately. It's obvious that not all of "us" in this world have had similar backgrounds regardless of level of "formal education." Seeing that fact on this sort of a worldwide forum has both enlightened and saddened me. Izzy, I've said for years that I'm a "traditionalist iconoclast." I'm that here as well. m
Resigned
i learned here that its ok to have A LOT of guitars & amps simply because they are beautiful & fun to setup, tinker with, upgrade, learn the history of, play, jam with, trade with friend at open mic to see how different we sound when we play each others guitar, yes guitars are a nice way for shy person to meet new people :) GAS is nothing to be ashamed of haha & as the proud owner of a mexican "fender baja" telecaster i also agree when you wrote its not necessary to spend lots of money to get a very good guitar !! thanks Izzy have a great weekend
surfpup
Answering the questions in reverse order because I'm such a rebel... I yam what I yam pretty much. Maybe I'm a little taller here than I am in real life. I think it could be really fun to have an online persona. Wish I had thought of that earlier. I think it's too late now. Then again it could get too confusing. Meh. Maybe I'll join again under a freaky pseudonym. One thing I've learned (or at least affirmed) about myself is I have a huge thirst for discovering cool new music. One of the real upshots of being here (besides a thorough understanding of the way a pickguard affects tone) has been the new music discovered via the suggestions of other members. Discoveries I've made here and the members to whom I am indebted for their suggestion: Ghost courtesy of ShredAstaire - super great band... who knew satanism could be fun? Mount Carmel courtesy of Twiz - jesus this is a great band that I cannnot get enough of! Tame Impala - I think I owe Dub123 for this one. Killer and very unique sound Leaf Hound - and a bunch of other heavy psych stuff thanks to Dem00n's posts Thanks fellas!
saturn
What have I learned about myself on the Forum? Um, I guess that would be that I know even less about a lot of things than I already realized. I try to project my true persona as much as I can, but I have a feeling that I end up coming across kinda different than I do to people who know me in person. I actually feel more awkward here than I do in "real life"
LHW
I'm pretty much "me" on every forum I inhabit. What have I learned? That you CAN become close to people you will likely never meet, and you WILL mourn them when they pass on. I still miss talking to AnimalFarm. retrosurfer1959
Good topic Izzy. Ive learned a lot mostly that I'm not of tolerant as others online as I would like to be, Ive never suffered fools very well in person and online doesn't seem to change that so I end up biting my tongue on here allot more in real life. Probably because in real life my background and my size usually get's me a lot of polite yes sir's but on line the keyboards are all the same size. Ive also earned that there are people you can feel like friends with and have that feeling of knowing someone at least as much as we can know each other. Ive met people on here I actually like and would consider friends which is strange on a computer terminal. he reverse is true also Ive met a few online people I just don't like and have no use for. another very strange concept in cyberspace but enough comes through for me to feel they have no code of ethics something I can't abide in person or on line. Ive also learned there are people out there that are just as ill as I am when it comes to guitars and music gear and that collection grow based on a persons financial means not their logic. And I'm pretty much 100% who I am online I rarely lie to anybody it's to hard to remember a lie let alone try to live it. Ive also learned a important personal lesson about my self having a personal secretary is hard on your righting skill svn with a lot of advanced degrees my Grammar and punctuation is horrible I'm used to putting down random scribbled thoughts and having somebody else clean it up and make it proper. Sadly I don'y have that person now as a retired person doing art full time and worse I just don't care anymore. Your keyboard has all the punctuation mark so put them wherever you want them. I choose to not care,
daveinspain
Damn, that's a mouth full... I started here from zero. Had no idea how to play a guitar. I was asking questions like how do you hold the pick without dropping it, What is palm and finger muting, what do I need to know to be able to jam with other musicians...etc Real basic stuff. Then there were my general guitar questions about set up as far as action, bridge hight, saddles, truss rod tension and relief...etc Then came theory, use of scales, fingering...etc. Mixed in there was amps, pedals, FX.... on and on and on... Also in the mix was lots of trivial stupid stuff that had nothing to do with guitars but lots to do with making friends, social behavior on line and edicate. Of course while all this was going on I was also taking guitar lessons and joined a band where I learned and huge amount more of everything I just mentioned... That's about it. Oh and BTW, I learned a bunch of abbreviations like IMHO and ROTFLOL... Last but not least I learned that the universe revolves around the Gibson Forum and we are all, "The chosen ones"
Riffster
I have learned a lot but also have wasted a lot of time here, What I have learned is that I should play my guitar more.

Valeriy
The good forum, as regards an information, the relationship between people etc. Comparing I am somewhat disappointed with the Russian music forum where I am several years. In addition, I study English here, but looking through various videos which here happen in English I found that I still almost understand nothing aurally :( . Maybe somewhere there are any links with the English speech and subtitles, written text?
milod
Valeriy... I know there are songs on Youtube with the lyric included in written English, but I do not know of guitar "lessons" with subtitles. Written English and spoken English often are very different. Our written language is almost crazy, but it is documented how it became so crazy over centuries of time. I do not believe Russian has a similar dictionary to the Oxford English Dictionary that has information on how spelling, pronunciation and meanings have changed since 800 A.D. (Neither do Japanese or Chinese languages.) Also, Russian has some sounds that are not in English. Grammar is very different. Also, English is like Russian because words can mean many things - and people do not always use "good grammar." We also have many dialects - and I believe that is true also with Russian. Here is one good song to study English with lyrics. It is "Country music," with a famous singer. It is almost my story too. Jesse James was an American "cowboy" outlaw that has a name that almost everyone knows today. m http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2L8iFGcx3X0
Valeriy
Milod, thank you very much :) . Indeed, it is very convenient when the text synchronized with singing and by a pretty good print clearly seen. I.e. on YouTube I’ll look for those song with the lyric included in written English, I've never seen such songs but not looking. Or I will make such videos with the lyrics in English from songs of my music collection that I wanted to learn , strange, this simple idea did not occur to me. For example, at me long ago already idea to do the integrated version of two songs Clean up Time and Rough Ride, their music fits very well with other each. Here, for example, Clean up Time:
