So what the heck is the number inked on the center seam?

I would not worry near as much about the binding (which can shrink and pull off the guitar making it necessary to cut it and glue back down) as what looks to be a neck issue. While I hate trying to make any judgement call from photos it looks like the neck is lifting. If you look you can see the back binding through a gap at the heel. If you are interested in the guitar I would write the seller and ask him about it. But if the neck is pulling up you will need to add the cost of a neck reset into the guitar.

Looks like a prior owner wanted to see the FON more easily.

I'm not seeing what you're seeing. Which photo?

The only thing about the guitar that I don't like is the replacement bridge.

Looks like a fairly clean example with the exception of the replaced bridge. I noticed that it doesn't have a truss rod and they don't mention a refret. I'd ask the seller for a picture sighting the neck to make sure it doesn't need a fretboard plane to get the neck straight.

There are 2 things about the finish on the neck that are bothering me. 1- there is no checking on the headstock. Everything else is checked. 2- looks like there is black paint under the finish on the sides of the neck and around the neck joint. It also looks pretty thick in those areas.

These might just be the way it looks or might be signs of some finish work. If I had the opportunity then I would black light those areas. Since this isn't a collector's piece because of that bridge, it might not be that big of a deal.

The binding doesn't bother me at all, the bridge a little. It's a 70 year old guitar it's probably going to need something. Ask a lot of questions as long as you know what to expect it'll soften the blow. Kind of like letting Lindsay Lohan drive your car <g>.

It's sold, so is it to someone here?

I would want to look inside -- large bridges were often combined with large bridgeplates to combat top issues. Then again, it may just be a large bridge.

Let's pick,
