custer
I recently purchased a 2000 SG Special. Can anyone tell me what pickups came standard in it. Thanks.
cjsinla
I believe that all of the SG Specials came with P90's. Gibson claims that they continue to make P90's the same way since they were first introduced. Why, are you looking at one that has something else in it? charlie brown
I recently purchased a 2000 SG Special. Can anyone tell me what pickups came standard in it. Thanks. Soap-bar P-90's traditionally. But, there were some that had Humbuckers, that were called "specials," in about that time frame. Does it have a "Satin" finish, or Gloss? Dog-eared, soap-bar pickup covers, or the standard surround, that goes around the dual coil (490T and 490R) Humbuckers? Photo's would help, IMMENSELY! custer
It had a gloss finish. The original pickups have been removed and replaced with SD Phat Cats. No routing was done to to body but there are mounting rings on the pickguard.
custer
I found one on the internet that looks just like mine. It has humbuckers and I think this was the case with mine also as the cutouts inn the pickguard don't look like they have been opened up.
EVOL!
A 2000 SG Special would have Gibson 490 humbuckers.
custer
Thanks. Its my first SG. For right now I am going to leave the Phat Cats in. They sound great, but somewhere down the road I may put stock pickups in.
Twiz
The stock pickups are good, but I think the Phat Cats are a really cool upgrade to that guitar. Post a sound clip if you get a chance.

custer
I have decided to leave the Phat Cats in. I've always liked P-90's and now that I've had the chance to sit down and really play and adjust the tone I'm really happy with the guitar the way it is. I'll try to get some pictures posted this weekend.

*sgstandard*
SG Specials DO come with humbuckers - I believe they were 490R in the bridge, and and 498T in the bridge. I had one a few years ago, and LOVED the bridge pickup, even for rhythm. Personally, I despise P-90's - can't stand the way they distort. But many people love 'em. *sgstandard*
PS; I meant 490R in the NECK position.
