Smurfbird
I recently took the gold rotomatics off my 2011 J-200 and replaced them with my preferred tuner. It already plays better because its stupid owner is too distracted by its beauty to mess things up.

Dave F
I like it alot. I may have to do it to mine. I was thinking about doing it to my J45 too.

Smurfbird
Dave, If you do decide to do it to a J-200, be sure to buy the Grover Tulips and not the others from Stew-Mac. The rotomatics have these thick stems that are the same as the Grovers at Stew-mac. The Gotohs, for example, are too narrow, but would probably be the ones for those smaller tuner heads... Jalex
Gorgeous guitar, it's on my bucket list. Tuners look great should have been on there when it left the factory.

Dave F
Did the new turners use the exsisting holes plus another or did they coverup the old hole?
Smurfbird
Unfortunately, silver rotos came with a 1958 Martin D28. This is my dad's old guitar that I had restored back to playability and life.

Smurfbird
Dave, The tuners went right into the old holes with the Grovers. The screws for the tuners were slightly different. Two holes instead of one and in a slightly different spot, so the original screw hole had to be filled in and new ones pushed through.

jannusguy2
Massive improvement on the J200. That D28 is gorgeous, too! My D28 sports the only Rotos in the house but they're supposed to be there so it's cool. Otherwise, I can't abide by those tuners..Nicely done! aliasphobias
I am a big fan of the Grover tulips as well. I have them on both guitars and prefer them over the stock Gibson (tulip) tuners. The holes line up perfect, and the guitars stay in tune much better. A big improvement in looks s.b.!
Dave F
After seeing your J200 I ordered some replacement buttons to try out first. Here's some before, during and after picts of my HB and J45. I'm still debating the J200. I like the look of your tulip buttons.
Smurfbird
Dave? Is that your wall of guitars there? That's a nice looking lot! I really like the tulips. Much lighter and just makes me happier. Initially, I thought I could live with the gold rotos, but it kept nagging at me. Once I was sure, it was a keeper, I customized. I have tulips on my Les Paul...which I bought used. Someone had painted it gold, which might bug some people, but I like the irreverence. Though I did pack the original case away. Apologies to the acoustic purists..it's an electric... 62burst
Yes. Love the greenish tulips. But, my, what big bushings you have . I recently did a switch from the Rotomatics to Waverly tuners on a slope-shoulder; the weight savings was huge... for the set of 6, I think it was a hair under 2 pounds (1.97? if memory serves), On a guitar that weighs maybe 4.25 lb.s. From a sound standpoint, one can only wonder if greater mass in the headstock tends to have a dampening effect on the vibrations getting down to the body of the guitar(?)... Btw: Dave gets my vote for best photo of the week, with his guitarfest background/foreground/mid-ground Bigsby/Silverface/Roto's, et. al shot; not that the SJ-200 wasn't beautifully & prolifically documented as well. kebob
Dave, please confirm as I'm thinking of changing out my tuners on my J-200. These are the correct tuners, right?: My link And you're saying the tuner peg fit perfectly, but you had to drill two holes instead of the one used by the old Rotomatics? One last question: was the screw hole left by the Rotomatics tuner covered by the new Grovers? If so, filling in would not be necessary, right? Smurfbird
OK, Yes, you've picked out the right tuners. Click on specs and you'll see in the third diagram down that there several different widths. That is how the rotos are as well. That .390" (9.91mm) dimension is that the Grovers have that the others don't. (Ot at least the ones I had gotten ahold of first.) You will likely need to fill in the single hole left by the roto and then drill two holes for the new screws. The new tuners should cover up the previous hole. It did for mine. As seen in the pictures. Good luck!
