gibson LP case questions

I've been shopping for a used Les Paul Studio, and have found several. Some with Cases and some without.

I know I will want a hard case and have been looking on line.

I have seen the "Gibson" LP cases for around 200 and the "Epiphone" LP cases for 80

Does anyone own both? I'd like to know if there is really a $120 difference in the cases or if the logo sprayed on it matters........

I'd also be interested on people's thoughts on the best "bang for your buck" in a hard LP case. I've looked on all the big box websites and guitarfetish..........it will rarely leave the house much less tour the world. Just want it as safe as possible for a decent value.

Thanks for the input,

Generally Gibsons over $1000 come with a case whilst ones priced under $1000 do not - even at $999!

I own them that came with and them that came without, so I can offer some suggestions for what to do if you purchase one without a hard case.

1. The Gibson gig bag is excellent. Fine for moderate, local travel.

2. Go to guitar shows. I picked up a Gibson hard case for an SG recently for $50 - it looked brand new

3. Shop around. I bought a case in Les Paul shape from Musician's Friend for a Tokai Love Rock. It was really solid and nicely built for only $50.

I really doubt there is much variation in terms of quality. Wear and tear is probably the only factor, and eBay pricing on things like this is very much up to what the seller considers it to be worth.

The Gibson cases are a bit better built but not enough to justify the diffence in price.

Note that the generic LP case that musicians friend sells is a very tight fit for a Gibson, it is too short, while the guitar fits it moves around inside and that's not safe

You're buying a used guitar, right? So there is no stigma to "used"... for my two Les Paul Studios that came in gig bags, I shopped eBay and bought a used (great condition, nearly as new) Gibson hard case for each for a bit over $100 ($125ish shipped IIRC).

Alternately, I still want to get one of the great KSB molded hard cases (the ones with the TSA locks). These are great protection for a Les Paul, and probably what I'd prefer if I were gigging or just heading out to a jam night. These I recall seeing on eBay for around $110 (haven't shopped them in awhile, just had a quick look, just did a quick search and spotted 2 @ $145, 1 @ $130 and 1 or 2 used). You need to shop for either of these though, those prices weren't just there on all examples.

I'd agree with those who say the Gibson case is better built and likely to be a little bit stronger and more hard-wearing.

If you aren't going to benefit from either of these qualities then the difference in price would be hard to justify.

Personally I bought an old, cheap-looking, very well-used, fairly knackered - and even slightly broken - tan leatherette LP-style case.

On the rare occasion when I take a guit to the local 'open-mic' night I always take my R0 and always use that case.

I use public transport to get to the venue which is in a slightly dodgy area of South London.

To carry a case which has Gibson emblazoned on the front is tantamount to wearing a t-shirt with 'Mug Me!' writ large....

I'd check on Amazon for a TKL Les Paul case. They're good cases, and won't break the bank. I have an older SG case from Epiphone, and I believe TKL actually was the manufacturer.

Also, those cases from Guitar Fetish are sweet, but the low price makes them sell pretty fast. I was going to get a tweed case for my Tele, and they were out. They are pretty good about getting stock replenished quickly. Just act fast if you do see something you like in stock.
