Daybreaker Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Hey what's up guys? Quick rundown, been a lurker for awhile but since I recently got my Gibson Dove about a month ago I felt I could jump into the fray here. I've had some bad experiences with Gibson electrics but this Dove not only restores my faith in Gibson guitars, but in good Gibson dealers. Did two mods, bone bridge pins from Colosi and a new bone saddle with a setup. I'm in love with Gibby acoustics and will own at least a couple more through my lifetime. I guess Fender electrics and Gibson acoustics aren't a bad combo. There is one thing though that I can't find any info on. The dealer I ordered the Dove through said that it had been discontinued in the past month or so. I've noticed that Doves aren't in stock many places online and there seems to have been a price jump from MAP around 2900 to MAP around 3200. Plus, the Dove isn't listed on the Gibson site anymore, just the Doves In Flight. Did this really get discontinued? Even though the H'Bird is much more known and popular, that would be a shame to see the Dove get tucked away.
j45nick Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 I don't know if the Dove was discontinued, but Gibson seems to be focusing on the fancier versions of low production volume guitars, such as the Dove. Hence the DIF availability. Most Gibson prices seem to have gone up as much as 10% or so this year, from what is posted on their website. Not sure how that will translate into the actual price paid, which is always less.
BigKahune Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 . Gibon moves guitars in and out of regular production all the time. The Standard Dove may not be in regular production. And it may not be on Gibson's website. But you could probably still order one. Here's from a couple years ago - http://forum.gibson.com/index.php?/topic/68390-okay-which-one-would-you-own/page__view__findpost__p__939696 .
E-minor7 Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 I think it was last year they introduced a 60's model with tomato rather than cherry-red back'n'sides and even the narrow nut-width. No tun-o-matic bridge though. But I'm sure these were from a limited collection and don't believe they became the biggest hit. If the regular Dove is stopped it could be to boost those reissues. Or just because the market for that flier is a bit slow. Dilemma is that they are less popular than among the broader audience than the Hummingbirds, but pricier. A very attractive classic it is under all circumstances.
j45nick Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 A very attractive classic it is under all circumstances. But not as nice as the Firebird, right?
zombywoof Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 I guess Fender electrics and Gibson acoustics aren't a bad combo. That has been my mantra since the mid-1960s. Gibson never seems to discontinue anything - they just bring it back with different woods and finishes.
ParlourMan Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 Gibson never seems to discontinue anything - they just bring it back with different woods and finishes. The Tommy Cooper business model, gone just like that, back again just like that.....
E-minor7 Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 But not as nice as the Firebird, right? Point 1 - Other members than me will agree they are 2 different things. Might be quite similar 'on paper', but A/B and you'll find out. The Dove is dripping with maple-sirup, a very elegant and smooth guitar, , , and of course fills it role in the classic spectrum like f.x. the H-bird. The Firebird is not that significantly maple'ish and though the wood is heard, it leans more towards something 'neutral' or in the middle (in lack of better words). Both are limousines - still the F is bound to take the trophy. I'll have to depart with one them at some point and the Dove will probably go. Won't be as easy as it sounds. Said this before, but the D loses a considerable amount of altitude with faded wings/strings. Not so with the F. It only becomes rounder - and a bit more quiet. I have found that sometimes every guitar here sounds like barbed wire in the high register - has to do with my state of ears'n'mind. In those situations the creamed maple is close to invaluable. Which on the other hand tells about the weakness of that wood when in the mood for straight acoustic power.
Daybreaker Posted May 23, 2013 Author Posted May 23, 2013 Thanks for the replies and info guys. Now that I think of it, I do remember that 60th anniversary model being issued recently. I wonder why Tom Petty didn't popularize the Dove like Keith Richards did with the Hummingbird.

It could have made a minor difference, but never in the league of Stones with their Birds - Guess a big and significant performance to nail it up with misses. The Tom Petty Dove moment isn't there, , , , , is it. . . .
