New J45 TV in the house

I went shopping for a J45 Standard yesterday and came home with a TV. I was overwhelmed with the tone and vibe of this instrument. I have owned many guitars in my day, starting with a '63 J45 that I bought new. This is probably the finest sounding new guitar I have ever played. I typically shy away from Red Spruce tops (experience mainly with Martins), because they always sounded a bit harsh to me, when new. This has no trace of harshness. The tone is very deep and full with bell-like trebles, clear articulation across the strings all the way up the neck.

I played another TV at a different shop and was not impressed with it. This one, however knocked me over.

I am disappointed with the cheap pick guard, though.. For a guitar with a list price over 4 G's, you'd think they could put a better PG on it. I'll need to change it. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

RB

Yep that J45TV is one fine guitar..... I got mine in 2009 and it just keeps getting better.

Agree about the pickguard....color doesn't seem right and they are pixel prints..... I swapped out my pickguard with a Greven Tortis Dark. I got a D28 one from Lmii and reshaped it using the stock one as a template and redid the radius so I could place it outside the rosette ring. I posted a pic here once but now I can't find it.... Congratulations ...mine is a keeper, I am sure you will find yours is as well...pretty versatile too....pickin, strumming or finder style all good on the J45TV.

Sal,The pickguard looks very good. Have you polished yours? It looks glossier than mine.

Thanks for the picture.

Mine looks likes Sal's now but not when I bought it in 2009. Mine came with a VOS finish that attempted to make it look like and old guitar.....the VOS was sticky and always scratching with even the lightest touch. Before I knew what the VOS was I thought I had an uncurred finish and something was wrong with it....after researching it on the web I found out it was the VOS goo. I think Gibson went from a VOS to a Matte finish on the TV sometime later.....either way, if you are looking to get the gloss, Virtuoso Cleaner and Virtuoso Polish will do the trick rather nicely. I have also heard others say Gibson pump polish works as well.....

The use of Virtuoso Cleaner will gradually (sometimes abruptly) "un-do" a VOS finish. Don't use it much if you like the aged, semi-matte VOS look.

I'm not a VOS fan, so my L-OO Legend has been somewhat un-VOS's since I bought it. It will probably not achieve the "new guitar" gloss look, but that's not what I'm after in any case.

I really like the vintage look of the softer gloss finish, and will leave it that way, most likely. The neck is a bit sticky when I play for an extended period, but that is no different than other Gibsons I've had. That will eventually go away, I'm sure.

Lovin' this guitar. I keep all my guitars tuned down a half and this one really responds nicely to that tuning. I'm using a set of Martin PB SP lights on it now, and have installed bone pins. Great vibe.
