jaxson50
He is the Best! I met him in a small club in 1969, he played for a hour then just went into a jam session with all invited to join in, he was just awesome ! Since then I have seen him 6 or more times, one man shows, with a big band, and with a small group. The best blues showman around! A walking talking Blues Encyclopedia! Here's a triva question, what was his major in college? And who was the guy he started The Rising Sons with in 64?

jdgm
Here's a triva question, what was his major in college? And who was the guy he started The Rising Sons with in 64? 1 - Animal husbandry (livestock farming). 2 - Ryland P. Cooder. The late Ed Cassidy (R.I.P.), drummer with Spirit was also in the band at one point. I win. I got both. Now: What instrument did Taj feature prominently in his band for 'The Real Thing' live LP? What does the 'P' initial in Cooder's name stand for? (Hint; it's not Pippy)... :) Regards!
jaxson50
1370123460[/url]' post='1382723']wasn't ry cooder in that band? Yes! And Taj majored in Animal Husbandry he wanted to be a vetenary md. He grew up working on a farm. Was a dairy manager, and seriously thought of giving up music to pursue farming. By age 17 he was milking 50 tp 75 cows a day, was a FFA member. jdgm
Fife, African Thumb piano, banjo and guitar including resonator, and John Hall played lead! Ry Peter Cooder Yup! Right on Ry! I was thinking of the tubas band - he had 3 tubas including Howard Johnson (of course).....and years later there was the band with the steel drums which was also fantastic, I think he called it the "International Submarine Band". And John Hall - you mean the guy from Orleans who is now a congressman or something?

John Oats from Hall and Oats...Taj did a one man show at the U of U once, he did three 45 min sets, then did a jam. He did one set on. The thumb piano, it was great. There are 4 or 5 Taj albums I go back to time and again; the 1st one with Ry, "Giant Steps" with Jesse Ed Davis, "Happy To Be Like I Am", "Recycling The Blues" and "Ooh So Good N'Blues" which is still just bloomin' great. He really knows. Have to admit I didn't like "Mo' Roots" or the one after - which I bought and can't remember the title of. I used to have "Sounder", the album and the book but have never seen the movie.
rct
I don't know why, but a radio hit of his, Why Did You Have To Desert Me? still gets regular play on my iPod. Musta been the time, school, something. It just sounds like the mid 70s to me. rct
Riffster
Taj's versions of Six Days On The Road is my favorite not to mention Stateboro Blues.
