Steve Vai - "Junkie"

Great album. He's got more creativity in his fingernail than 1,000 musicians put together. That album really introduced him to the world, unless you were a huge Zappa fan. The Attitude Song still amazes me.

Yep, great album and huge Zappa fan here. I was one of those who couldn't wait to get their hands on this album. At the time I didn't really expect to hear so much Zappa influence in his writing but I imagine it was inevitable.

I was pleasantly surprised to say the least lol.

Thanks for posting that Searcy.

I always got a kick out of this clip of Vai talking about his audition for Frank.

That cassette came out when I was in high school and there were make copies made and passed around. For the bass geeks among you this was also my first exposure to the monster bass workings of Stu Hamm

Here Steve when he was 8 or so.

That footage appears to be about 1981. If it is I saw that tour.

Looks like the same bunch of players.

1981 in Vancouver. I didn't even know who Steve Vai was at the time.

Never heard of him before that concert.

That was my introduction to Steve Vai.

Frank had plenty of great rhythm guitarists over the years but not too many ever got the lead roles. Adrian Belew comes to mind but alternate lead guitarists were few and far between.

Frank always said he would only hire musicians to play parts he was not able to play. Steve Vai was one of those exceptions.

I'm completely amazed at his unparalleled mastership of the instrument, but I find him musically so utterly boring I've rarely managed to listen through a whole song.

This was interesting at first, but when the solo thingy started I lost it. wtf was that noodling bullshit?

he's 1000% technique, -1,000,000% creativity.

I'd rather listen to Bieber...

Not at all. It's an instrumental interpretation of the highs and lows that a junkie goes through. It's very profound and is no more noodeling that Vivaldi's "Four Seasons".

Though it has a bit more whammy bar. [biggrin]

I had Flexable on vinyl. I found it brilliant but odd. And where were the "songs"? [biggrin] This was before I had listened to much Zappa.

When I saw him live he brought up a little girl and had her hum any melody. He then made up a tune right then and there on that melody. The band followed his every lead perfectly. If that ain't creative then I don't know what is. I like to listen to SRV more than Vai, but I think that the Vai is a creative genius. Here's something more on the "creative" side.

He had his kids do the same thing and came up with this song.

Well,, that was freaking awesome. I have never seen/heard that rendition of that tune before. Loved that. [thumbup]

Not bad for just "bullshit noodling" and a total lack of creativity.

I wonder if any Bieber fans would dig it?..lol.
