That album really introduced him to the world, unless you were a huge Zappa fan. I was one of those who couldn't wait to get their hands on this album. At the time I didn't really expect to hear so much Zappa influence in his writing but I imagine it was inevitable. I was pleasantly surprised to say the least lol. Thanks for posting that Searcy. I always got a kick out of this clip of Vai talking about his audition for Frank. I didn't even know who Steve Vai was at the time. Never heard of him before that concert. That was my introduction to Steve Vai. Frank had plenty of great rhythm guitarists over the years but not too many ever got the lead roles. Adrian Belew comes to mind but alternate lead guitarists were few and far between. This was interesting at first, but when the solo thingy started I lost it. wtf was that noodling bullshit? he's 1000% technique, -1,000,000% creativity. I'd rather listen to Bieber... Not at all. It's an instrumental interpretation of the highs and lows that a junkie goes through. It's very profound and is no more noodeling that Vivaldi's "Four Seasons". The band followed his every lead perfectly. If that ain't creative then I don't know what is. I like to listen to SRV more than Vai, but I think that the Vai is a creative genius.
