Getting into Alvin Lee - Album suggestions?

I don't know much about Alvin Lee or Ten Years After but would like to give some of his stuff a listen - what album should I purchase to give me an idea of his music?

I guess the obvious answer is a 'best of' album but I just wondered if there are any Alvin Lee fans on the board that could give me a more specific starting point?

Thanks!

Yes - 'Ssssh', 'Stonehenge', 'Cricklewood Green' and the earlier live album 'Undead' - that's the stuff!

+1 [thumbup]

To me, though...Alvin Lee/"Ten Year's After" was best "Live!" More polished, at times

maybe, on record...but the energy and real dynamic of the band, was when they played "Live!"

It was true, of a lot of (if not most) bands, from that era, especially. Probably still is

even in today's "tech" world, for the most part. The Allman Brother's comes to mind, as well.

But, those are good/great albums, by Alvin, and TYA! [biggrin]

His guitar work is very good on all his albums, so you really can't go wrong. But one of my favorites was I believe their first which was called "Undead" but had nothing to do with zombies or anything, it was just some marketing gurus idea of titling an album that was mostly recorded live. One side has only two tracks on it, but they are both amazing jams - Woodchoppers Ball, and I May Be Wrong, But I Won't Be Wrong Always. Those two tracks contain most of his best licks.

I took delivery of my Les Paul Signature "t" on March 6, 2013, the same day Alvin Lee left us. I named my LP "Talvin" in his honor. As for which CDs to purchase, I recommend you get all of them, they all got nuggets on them. My current favorite, Ten Years After At The Fillmore East, along with Undead and Recorded Live, clearly demonstrate what this band can do, deliver the goods!

Some good suggestions here but, also on the Woodstock album he stole the show. Ten Years After "Live in Europe" will not disappoint. I'm still not over his passing. He is one of my earliest influences. If you can get the first album it comes with extra tracks. Cool stuff like a studio version of "Spider in my Web." Alvin was a blues influence to me with "Slow blues in C." I got to see him once with Ten Years Later. It was a trio he had formed after Ten Years After. It was a great concert.

Ditto here for "A Space In Time" beware of CDs recorded in the past few years because the rest of the band somehow got to keep the name and took on a new guitarist a few years ago-without Alvin they just can't be Ten Years After-I can't see how they were allowed to do it.
