Recording my video clip tomorrow...

So tomorrow's the big day! We have to be at the studio at 8am bright eyed and bushy tailed, all 12 of us... \:D/ We are bringing the whole set up as if we were going to play a gig but I'm not sure if we will actually play live or do a playback to the recorded version... If we only do a playback version I'm going to ask them to record a live take as well. Having the whole group and a couple guest players is going to sound amazing... We will be; bass, drums, 3 guitars (including me), 2 trombones, sax, trumpet, flute, 2 female backing singers and myself on lead vocal as well... Now I am not a great singer or anything but the song is a rocker and I can pull it off...

Has anyone here ever done a video clip? Whats the norm to play the song live and they sync it up to the recorded track or just have the track blasting and we go through all the moves as if we were playing it live?

I made this one myself, not very pro looking but being as I'm a Minimalist act it's easier to make. I've made some pro video's in collage with a high-end Grass-Vally rig but this one was made on my Mac Pro with a stock version of IMoive. I did make a good audio recording with a nice MOTU rig I have, my room's suck so it was a bit of a challenge to even make that part "good".

Any-how's, I first worked on "playing" the song for a good while so I had it down pat. Then made the audio recording and went to a local auditorium with a big stage and all and shot the video with my Sony Handycam, with out any audio playback. I made several take's from different angle's and had quite a bit of video by the time I was done with the shoot, probably played the song about 10 time's altogether. After I edited the video, I was very surprised how closely it all fit when I imported the audio to IMoive from DP5, there are a few parts that get slightly out-of-sync but it's not that bad for the equipment I used. The audio is the best part about it really as MOTU make's good stuff and I do have training and experience with DAW's and recording.

So basically I made the audio track and built the video around it the best I could with out gen-locking sycro's. Just don't be to surprised if they ask you guy's to play your song's many time's with or with out the audio play-back track.

Yeah I helped with a video shoot once.

They will make you mime in sync with a track blasting and sync it up in the edit (you will get a click or beep sound 3 seconds before the track starts so you know when to start playing or something like that).. They will probably make you do it like 25, 30 times depending on how many cameras and cameramen they have and get you from various angles etc etc.. Its gonna be a long day but the results are usually worth it.. [thumbup]

Good luck man, have fun and let us know how it goes [thumbup]

Probably you already in studio now… if you will record audio (together with the video) and several times tell the musicians to adjust their combo (amps) once and never to twist after. Because it will allow to choose successful audio pieces from the different variants and mount. If musicians will twist then the sound will be different in the different variant and to mount a good final audio track it will be difficult or impossible. In turn, the video, yep, here is easier, you can always put any frames especially when a lot of people. Though here too there is a skill to do a good video. For example, I like this video :) ... Paul McCartney's birthday is coming soon. This song is hard to repeat after him, but Bee Gees made an original clip in video based this song:

As I've mentioned before, Brian Ray, my old bandmate, occasionally plays with Paul (first time at the superbowl), and he's spun off a new group that has a just-produced video that's a bit more contemporary than that one by the BeeGees. He's kind of hammy in this one. Lots of very quick cuts. And, of course, a bit of sex.... Don't forget the sex!

Just got home from the video shoot... 12 hours, I'm beat!!! It was a long day and lots of work. We had a great time doing it though, lots of laughs... It really went well, now it's in the hands of the post production people. The video crew were great, the director did a great job... Very professional crew all around. Can't wait to see how it comes out... They said I should have the finished master in about three weeks....

Cougar, good friends with you, it is cool. Yep, contemporary video for clips are done now with lots of quick cuts and with exact mounting shots, nowaday style. But there is also another manner when think out any story for a short clip, as a small movie. Such are still interesting though occur from the 60's, not too fan of Kinks, but some are very cool.

My video clip has a story to it, it's not just the band playing a song. There will be a mix of shots of the band playing on a set, animation, green screen FX and some other cool stuff.... [biggrin] The down side for lots of the people here on the forum is it's in Spanish... The up side is it really rocks, is very up beat and I think it will be easy to follow the storyline from whats going on in the video...
