Question that has probably been answered before

There really is no answer. Strings are a matter of personal preference. I could tell you what I like but that does not mean it would work for you. It depends on your style, whether you tune to pitch or tune down, and generally what you want to pull out of a guitar. Sometimes it is the guitar itself. While I generally prefer a heavier gauge round core string, I am not about to take one of my old guitars without a truss rod and put 13s on and tune to pitch.

Only way to go about it is to experiment. When I get a guitar that is new to me I generally juts play around with different strings and different gauges just to see what the old girl can do.

For your first several string changes, buy different brands - listen and see which set sounds best on your guitar. Every guitar, especially a well-made quality instrument like your J45, is different and it takes some experimentation to find the right strings. On my Bird I've settled in on D'Addario EXP 12s.

The guitars come with .012-.053 ( or .052/.054)

Start there. These are at just about every shoppe.

Elixir Nano Ph.Bronze ,sound good and are coated for long life but cost $15-17.

Ernie Ball Slinky are $5..non coated so they feel a little more metally but sound good.

That's funny, I just got some EJ19s and put them in this afternoon.

Is it a custom as in rosewood b/s? If it is after you've tried the ej19's then try some 80/20's, that's what I found to sound the best on mine [thumbup]:) .
