Bram Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Ok fellows, I've changed my mind a quite a bit about the 2008 LP Standard. I've played one today (in private, a Honeyburst) for about 2 hours...it belonged to a friend of mine. Together we enjoyed some beer and cigarettes and man...that Les Paul had a GREAT, AWESOME tone!! It had a very 'BLUESY' feeling to it...something I've never felt in a Les Paul before. Very clear and open sounding, but still thick and pure. Real BALLS, killer tone! It was a great experience... I still love my solid bodied 88' LP Standard very, very much, but this 2008 LP Standard had something very special to it...very clean and thick, bluesy tone. It's a great Les Paul, really... I totally wasn't expecting this... Thanks.
Flight959 Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Is that the one with that new strange neck shape?? Flight959
deepblue Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 I like the transparent back plates. Id like a set for my R9.
80LPC Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Any chance of posting some sounds from the different LPs ?

80LPC Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 They all sound different. I'd like to hear the difference...
Bram Posted December 21, 2008 Author Posted December 21, 2008 Yes, it's the one with the 'strange' neck shape...the 2008 LP Standard also felt 'bigger' overall (which is a little bit strange for a Les Paul size/body, but that's probably how they're made now). It played great, low/medium action, 10's and it rarely went out of tune... We played it through a Fender Studio amp (red knob serie) and the tone was just great. I'd say: very woody, clear, open, but also sort of 'big' at the same time. Very bluesy sounding LP. This guitar would eat my Standard Faded for breakfast, in every aspect (really). So, I think the 2008 LP Standard has a killer tone with the stock Burstbucker Pro pickups and Gibson electronics. Oh my god, I actually LOVED the Burstbuckers in that guitar!! If I had the 2008 LP Standard I wouldn't change a damn thing... Compared to my solid LP it's less compressed with more clarity/punch, but still with a great thick clean tone. Blues, blues, blues. I know it's impossible to compare a LP with a Strat, but this 2008 LP Standard seemed to have some of that Strat vibe in it...all three pickup combinations sounded great, but it was particularly the neck pickup that made me crazy...beautiful tone.
Thundergod Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Good to hear that man... so they are worth a try eh? Thanks for sharing that with us, I know there are lots of folks here that cant decide between a "new standard" and a "real gibson", so your oppinion will help them a lot (most of them cant decide mainly because of so many people saying bad things about new standards).
Guitar slinger Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 I'm dying to know how the neck feels.
Bram Posted December 21, 2008 Author Posted December 21, 2008 You're welcome. They're definately worth a try. Edit: I'm not a neck expert...I know it was a 60's neck; felt pretty big/solid to me. My Standard Faded has a 'thinner' feeling neck in comparison.
rocketman Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 I only played only one 2008 Standard (my Premium Plus is the "old" version). I liked it but it didn't sing to me enough that I had GAS for it. I really can't explain it in words though. I guess it's just personal taste. Then again it took me years to pick out my guitars, so I'm not giving up on a 2008 version yet...
