hi there

i would like to understand more about custom shop acoustic models. I have crossed a very nice southern jumbo true vintage which is stamped with the custom shop logo behind the headstock.

what is the difference between custom shop and non custom shop acoustic

i hope the experts around this forum would gently explain all about those marketing segments :)

tanx in advance

Hank ,

the custom shop models are models that are made on the same production line as the normal production guitars but are pulled aside sometimes for custom inlays or speciall trim

but a custom shop model could also be a J 200 standard with a Cherry sunburst or an Ebony finish ... because it's made in the same line of production but has a special feature ... so basically Gibson Montana is one big custom shop !

your Southern Jumbo T.V is not available as a standard model ... it's not listed on the gibson website so it's a custom shop piece because it's not part of the normal production .

here's an example . the J 200 Montana Gold is normally Maple Back & Sides but this one has Rosewood Back & Sides so it's a custom shop piece :

hope that helps

A "bunch of wheat"??? LOL What a maroon!!!

It's even more amusing when you know that Montana's moto is Oro-y-Plata. Gold and Silver. The maroon in marketing had no idea of what he was doing and chose to go with the wheat theme. Don't ask. No one knows why. It's just another in a long list of silly marketing decisions that were made at that time.

My Gibson is a 12 Fret Southern Jumbo. It's got adirondack top and hide glue construction (I can see the white drips on the braces) and vintage style white tuners and vintage sunburst. It's stamped on the back and label Custom Shop. It's got almost all the same specs as a true vintage. The biggest difference in the two is that mine has the black and blue interior case instead of the True Vintage tan and pink interior case. Keith at Bailey brothers told me that only the True Vintage guitars come with that case and they don't even sell that case.
