Folks ,

Wow I just checked the gibson acoustic website and alot of instruments have been marked out of production including the TV series (Hbird and SJ200) , Legend Series and ALOT MORE !! What the hell happened? Artist models like the Sheryl C&W , Emmylou Harris have also been marked out of production . I get some models like the Jackson Browne ,Sheryl SJ & the Costello COP & 5 star exclusives which were supposed to be limited editions but the rest I don't get

does anyone know what's up ?

I don't see where they are marked out of production. They are not listed on the website, but I searched for the L-00 Legend and the H'bird TV and found both. Neither was marked OOP as far as I could see.

Dennis ,

At the bottom on the left (after PRODUCT GROUPS) you can see a box that says "SHOW OUT OF PRODUCTION MODELS" if you click it it will show all of the models that are OOP

Ah, I see. That is an awful lot of models to suddenly go out of production! I think a lot of this was just cleaning up models off the website that have been out of production for some time, but some of these are disappointing. I still want an L-00 Legend and a Hummingbird TV!!! I also noticed there are a few new models listed.

Oh, and my name is John, not Dennis. :)

That's how the Masterbilt fiasco started....on the Epiphone sight clicking Out of Production reveals a MASSIVE amount of out of productions, the Masterbilts are now down to just two models. Most of them can not be found at retailers either. Not a single new Epiphone Hummingbird Pro is available in the entire country even tho they are supposedly still IN production. Clearly there is poor management going on there if not out right closing. Most retail stores including GC carry very few Gibsons..I asked them why not? ..They told me they were too expensive, too "touchy on quality"..and they had much trouble moving Gibsons. If Gibsons are not moved within a Gibson specified time..they say..then the retailer looses out with lesser profits. Also Gibson demands that most retailers carry the full line of Gibson or nothing. Little wonder they may run the risk of going out of business. and just compare the price of a Martin D-18 solid hog dred with the cost of a Hummingbird..also a sold hog dred. ...very non competitive. IMO Gibson is sliding bad, and it is likely the cause of poor management, not poor quality guitars. Go a head now guys, lynch me up! It's just my opinion.

Simplify, simplify, simplify. I'm ok with tightening some of the variation offerings, and the limited artist runs. Perhaps this will open up some room for a whole new line of JT Banner reproductions, but I doubt it. Make a guitar. Make the best you can - they should all be True Vintage Legend quality - that should be the standard. As far as I know, Jaguar and Ferrari don't really have a line of "entry level" cars - Gibson needs to be the best it can be, and produce and sell all the best it can - if trimming down all these variations is a step towards greater excellence, I'm all for it.

I think...

I just went to the site and I read that completely differently. Clicking on the "SHOW OUT OF PRODUCTION MODELS" shows you the current models AND the ones that are out of production. My search of same shows the new J-35 and the J-45 Standard on the list and I know those are not out of production...yet.

I'm unsure why they would stop producing any of the true vintage line that really doesn't make sense to me. The J200 and hummingbird are traditional guitars that most ppl want.

Signature guitars I can see and I believe they should have only been sold in ltd runs anyway.

Guitar light your posts are nauseating I have yet to see you post something about gibson with optimism.

This was discussed at the Homecoming. IIRC, the official reason is that a radically shortened list of production models makes life simpler for Gibson and for dealers. (Not to mention all the folks who complain in those annoying threads about the number of options making their heads hurt. :) ) This wouldn't matter much, if it weren't for the "No custom orders" thing.

Pure speculation on my part, but combine these with introduction of a new model priced to sell like hot cakes, and it starts to look like a consistent plan for ... Well, let's just say, for having a couple of quarters where the books will look extra nice.

Thats it, we have a winner. It seems Gibson is choosing volume over margin. Im sure the TV's delivered the highest margin but relatively low volume. While the J-35 will be just the opposite. Still, I cant imagine the HB TV would go out of production as I imagine thats one TV model (along with J-45) that would stll sell 'acceptable' volume.

Wow, thats a whole lot of stream lining. Probably not a bad thing,if the "out of production" models

are not moving. I certainly had questions on why some of the signature models were chosen in the

first place.

My guess and it is a pure guess would be it's just a tightening, streamlining, fitter leaner machine type exercise. However, such an exercise is usually a pre-cursor to being floated, sold off or off-shored. Off-shored doesn't seem like it would be a good step, so, perhaps one of the other two could be a more realistic option.

This is connected to Martin's upcoming announcement of the CEO-Hummingbird, CEO-J-200 and CEO-Dove.....in BozoBurst

This might be entirely unrelated, but Moody' lowered the outlook rating for Gibson from positive to stable at the end of May -- less than a year after it was raised to positive in late June of 2012 -- because it's debt to earnings ratio was too high. Not a good thing if the company is shopping for money.
