jdgm
I was playing "2nd Winter" this evening - all those great tracks - "Memory Pain", "Good Love", "Slippin' and Slidin'" and this one which still completely floors me 43 years later; "I Love Everybody". Incredible, to this day I've never heard anything quite like this. His drummer said "there ain't anyone that knows more blues licks than Johnny Winter". I saw him a few times in those years. A contemporary of Jimi, years before SRV and all the power-blues stuff that comes since. And remember him on "Hard Again" by Muddy? Truly awesome. He's getting on now but ladeez and gennelmens, give it up for Mr Johnny Winter please. And here he is tearing it up in 1987 with the headless guitar - note the thumbpick - I will always love the musicians who hit me between the ears when I was 15! Regards! AndyK
Great player. Check out interviews on youtube. He was gigging at 15, with Edgar who was only 12!!!
10K-DB
One of the albums my older bro had when I was a kid was "Johnny Winter Live And" w/Rick Derringer . It always stuck w/me to today. What great stuff to grow up on! "Good mornin Lil' School Girl" was good one off that album.
Izzy
When I was little my mom had loads of vinyls and second winter was one of them. I have it now. I never cared for that stuff as a kid because it was the 80s and I was all about MJ, Madonna and Prince. Much later I heard Mr Winter and was like..."I can't digest this!" I know it's good stuff but it is so overwhelming to me. I can't handle more than two songs at a time before I get dizzy and want to listen to punk or pop-rock. Why is SRV easyer to listen to? Why is one more popular than the other? I will admit that Hendrix is another man I find intolerable. I know he's good and I hear the talent but it makes me very axious and I can't handle more than two songs in a row. I can listen to Page all day though. Kaiser Bill
I was first exposed to Johnny in '69 or '70. Almost wore out the "head" album...I think it was his first. Good Morning Little Schoolgirl and Drown in My Own Tears were two of my faves.

surfpup
Johnny has a distinctive and very ferocious slide guitar voice. I like it.

Hey Izzie, I think the answer to your question is.....It was the age and drugs at the time that made one artist SO 'popular'. I sometimes hear some recordings that were 'great' to me in the day.......and now I think...."What was I thinking"??? SRV was a great player ...BUT... he is a bit overplayed and tired to me now. I like to keep on keeping it fresh....There is plenty of new talent to be found. ;)
bonzoboy
Johnny Winter is a monster guitarist and just wrenches every bit of emotion imaginable from a guitar.I saw him do a cover of The Stones' "Silver Train" on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert one night back in the mid 70s and it just blew me away. His cover of "Stray Cat Blues" just blows the Stones' version out of the water and from that point on the song became his, because his version made the Stones' original recording sound like a poor cover band whenever I heard it since then. PingPongBob
Johnny inspired me to buy a Firebird in the mid 70's. It's long gone, but I have this arriving tomorrow.

L5Larry
Back in the early 70's, between Johnny, Dave Mason and Steve Stills (and two local acquaintances), I had to have a reverse body Firebird. I picked this '64 up in '75 for $470: Sold it at the Dallas guitar show in 1995.
