1959 J 200 Natural

One of the best ones I ever played was a 59' but the one this guy is playing does not sound really very good.

The back & sides I think are laminated on these guitars.

I agree. While the fundamental tone was pleasing it didnt have much sonic depth I felt, hence I wonder if it is indeed a laminate back and sides maple. Although I really feel the J-200 is the most ideal guitar for big thumb Tony after seeing him on this and the TV version demos.

Hahaha, jesus, man, you should get a job in a guitar store with chat like that.... that's the bamboozling chit-chat that gets the clueless to part with that extra 100 quid for the next model up..... Every thought of a Marketing career? ;)

OK lets get the facts straight. I owned this before MV got it. It is not laminated and the bridge is the original. Tony's lack of enthusiasm is evident in the multiple "old guitar" statements. I think the recording doesn't do it justice. For example, Ren Ferguson himself saw and heard the guitar at the homecoming and said it was a very nice 59' and had a great sound. I don't think Ren would have said that if he didn't mean it.

If you are looking for a wonderful vintage J200, you will be hard pressed to find a nicer one than this 59 J200 at Music Villa. Don't take my word for it, go play it yourself.

... said it was a very nice 59' and had a great sound. ...

I played this guitar at the Homecoming, and want to second that. I've tried several '59s in the last two or three years, and liked this the best of the lot. Very characteristic of late-'50s J-200 tone, too. As a bonus, it is also the lowest priced of the bunch (tho' not by much).

BTW, the idea that a '59 J-200 will sound more muffled because the back and sides are laminated is completely wrong. There's nothing inherently wrong with laminate for back and sides. The cheap laminate used on cheap guitars, consisting of two thin veneers of nice wood and a core of some junk, kills tone. The laminate used on the sides and backs of J-200s was an upgrade -- more expensive than solid wood -- used to make the sides and back more reflective.

"Laminates are bad" is just another one of those half-truths everyone "knows", thanks to the Internet. As is so often the case, the facts are more complicated than the oversimplified slogan that everyone parrots suggests.
