Dennis G
Yeah! Sun, surfing, bikinis. It's going to be a great weekend coming up. I can't wait to get there. And as a "local", I won't even THINK of going anywhere near downtown for the next two weeks. It's like staring at my grandkids and getting pi$$ed off in traffic! But if you're into the surfing thing (I personally don't like participating in anything that lowers my standing on the food chain), it's the place to be!! Have fun! saturn
Looks like a fun time. I've never tried surfing. And at 45 don't see myself taking it up as a new hobby. But I've always thought it would be something I could be good at since I seem to have good balance and coordination.

Not at all like water skiing notably.

Californiaman
Just watched Julian Wilson (Aus) get the highest score for a wave during the entire event so far. He racked up 9.83 on a backside 360 that looked to me to be perfect. Incredible move! His two-wave total of 18.03 is the highest score so far. This kid is the real deal and can be the favorite to take it this year.

Californiaman
You tip over any porta pots CaliMan??? rct Ha! That was crazy! I'm glad we hit the road right after the men's final. It was on the news as I was driving home. I hope that the police are able to identify some of the thugs involved in that. It was a pretty cool event until then. I watched a lot of the video of the rioters (belligerent punk kids) just a few minutes ago. It always starts with one or two idiots and then the rest of the idiots follow. For my part, I was the responsible parent standing on the water's edge watching the surfers. My kids liked it until they realized there were thousands of people all around them. At one point they started throwing out t-shirts and it got a little hairy. Some guy jumped up right in front of me to get one. The problem for him was that he jumped right into me. I felt the impact, but he really felt the impact. The guy was complaining that he hurt his ribs. Oh, well that's what happens when you hit a 300 lb immovable object. Other than that, it was pretty uneventful. The best match-up of the event was the woman's final. It came down to the last ride at the end of the 35 minute time period. Dennis G
This is why most of us "locals" stay the hell away from downtown during $hit like this. Most of these a$$holes don't live here but just come down to raise hell. Very reminiscent of 15 years or so ago when every 7/4 downtown would be a riot zone. HBPD finally said "enough" and took a zero tolerance policy. Not universally popular, but effective. Seems like it may be time to go "back to the future". The cops were herding the trash from the (909) right in front of the the place I was renting at the time. 200 block on 10th st. And you're right Dennis, my feet never touched the sand last week. A friend of mine who lives here in Santa Maria was at the epicenter of the 86 riot. He was standing right there on Main St. when some drunken' belligerent punk told a police officer to "F-off" and took a swing at him. The copper maced him right then and there and that's when all hell broke lose. Needless to say my friend high-tailed it out of there before he could get caught up in the mahem. It's funny, I had been trying to get him and his boys to come down with us for the event. He called me first thing Monday morning to see if we'd been caught up in any of the riotting. We were far away by then.
