Hey folks this is my first post, but I have been reading the form for a long time. I have realized I need to finally get a Gibson acoustic and was wondering if anyone had any advice on where I can get them online. I have been looking at musiciansfriend they seem good but I have not heard anything about them. Also, if any here knows a store in ottawa Canada that carries a selection of gibson acoustics that I can try that would also be helpful. thanks

BFD, my best advise to you is Bargain With The Seller. Unless money is not an issue, you should be able to negotiate 30% to 40% off, especially if you're paying cash. Good luck. Ce.

Is there any way you could buy one from a shop where you could personally handle, inspect, and most importantly play the guitar you will be buying?

I know folks buy on-line all the time, and I'm sure the best deals money-wise are to be had that way, but personally and if at all possible I would want to play a guitar before buying it. Gits vary so much from one to the other, and then there's the whole subjective thing -- how it feels/sounds/plays to you -- not to mention any little (or perhaps even big) imperfections that might be important to you but that others might not notice or care about...

There's so much riding on the choice of THE guitar that I'd be loathe to leave it to some sales or shipping person who I know nothing about.

Just my 2 cents, adjusted to a negative $1. after inflation, mortgage crisis, various economic bailouts, etc.

Perhaps if they are running a particularly aggressive sale that might be true. My local Gibson dealer beat the Net price by 15%. They can order one in if they don't have stock, and you don't have to buy it if you try it and don't like it as long as it's not a white elephant (that's what my dealer offered). IMO, always best to develop a local relationship if one is to be had. Don't know the particulars of your locale, though.

Cheers,

Les

Agree 100%. That they let you back off an order if the guitar doesn't seem right to you is great.

I would love to play at a store but I have no car and the store is difficult for me to reach. I have never been there, it was suggested on this forum by es-335. Right now the most likely way of getting a precious gibson is online because of deleivery. And for those of you reading this closely, yes I am picking a guitar instead of getting a car.

I do understand that you have hard time getting around in town without a vehicle especially in this weather(snowy)..

but I'd really recommend you to go down to the local store and try some guitars out.

Especially when buying a gibson, I think you should play the guitar before you buy it:)
