duluthdan
Curiousity question. Playing my SJ-200 Standard (2002)I happened to glance into the soundhole to look at the "X" brace and was mildly surprised to find what appears to be like a little "Wing" piece mounted just in front of the "X". Photo on the left is the little wing as viewed from the soundhole, picture on the right is taken inside, from the bottom looking up at the profile of this "Wing". Especially curious to know if other SJ-200 owners also have this little piece? Any others? Have never seen this before - wonder if the "previous owner" had a trade secret... hope I'm not unleashing Pandoras box...
GDC
Hey Bud. Was just sitting here playing my 2012 J-200 while scanning the board. Mine has the same "wing" as yours. Must be a tone wing :) Juan Carlos talked me into buying this 200, and I'm glad he did. It was a bit stiff and quiet when new, giving me pause, but it has begun to develop a very strong sound - just like JC said it would. It has always had a very rich sound,,, reminds me of a piano, but it's really becoming something special. How does yours sound?

Thought this would be a great John Denver type strummer, but its so much more - love the clarity and string seperation, great for finger picking, and even tolerates my humble use of a flat pick well. Its really got a proud sound. Thanks for looking for the "Tone Wing" - I like that term.
onewilyfool
I'll bet you could probably knock that brace out and the guitar would be fine, maybe even better....I think a little redundant, but if it sounds good now, just play it and enjoy it!!! Just be happy you have so much saddle showing, you won't have to get a neck reset for a loooong time!!
frenchie1281734003
Aren`t there three of those "Little wing" braces around the underside of the soundhole? Having owned two J-200`s (2010 & 94) plus a 94 J-100 Xtra, I have noticed that the newer models have a much more pronounced (Pointy) little wing braces than the earlier models. duluthdan
A heavier version of the standard popsicle soundhole bracing? Isn't the "popsicle" brace on the upper side of the soundhole? I hear of some hot-rodding their guitar, and removing the popsicle brace. Never understood it, but some seem to rave about it. Innaresting. AnneS
My j-100xtra's got it, too. Never thought much about it, but now I'm curious about its function. Interesting...

frenchie1281734003
So, what you're saying is. Their wings are growing.......... <_< Yep! The newer guitars have pointier/deeper wings than the earlier Bozeman one`s. It seems to be an evolving thing. Steve.

Never understood it, but some seem to rave about it. Innaresting. My old Gibsons and most of my guitars have them on both sides of the soundhole. I would not remove them as they help keep the top from buckling. I have actually had them put in a few pre-War mail order guitars that did not have them. RusRob
That is pretty normal on most X braced guitars. Usually they are just a flat brace but I noticed in the pic it is scalloped. That is a nice touch. I put all new X bracing an LG-0 I picked up a while ago and I scalloped mine. I have read that will help with projecting the sound making the guitar louder. Not sure that's true but scalloped braces look cool...
