Different Finish = Different Wood?

Do you think Gibson will use a different grade of wood for non-transparant finishes (i.e. Goldtop) compared to a transparent finish (i.e. Cherry Sunburst)? Would a "less pretty" wood grain be heavier/lighter in weight? Can the weights of LP's drastically differ depending on wood selection that is based on what finish the guitar will have? If so, which guitars would be affected, and how?

Not exactly.

Brief story on LPs

Les Pauls always had a carved maple top - except for the 57 custom - and they were Goldtops. In 58 Gibson realized that they should expose the beautiful maple top that thos guitar often had, so they started finishing in cherry sunburst as well.

I think some Customs have a mahogany cap - not maple.

The grain and patterns in the wood have absolutley no bearing on weight. Solid color tops tend to not get the best looking tops. Most likely they will get the worst ones but it doesn't make any difference in wieght or sonically.

yeah the new standards (and maybe traditionals) use AA grade maple caps on the burst finishes and A standard i think on the goldtop/ebony finishes.

check out the gibson usa site and it says somewhere on the 2008 standard description

I believe they do

'54-'61 LP Customs don't even have 'caps'. their body is made of 1-piece mahogany.

solid color tops doesn't always get the uglier woods. check-out this unfinished GT on the CS:
