T50 Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Hello gents, I just bought an old set of Fralin zebra humbucker set (8.5k/9.5k) for my 2002 LP standard (the one in the center). They are not installed yet. Now, I want to see if it would be good idea to change the pots as well. Any opinions? Recommendations? Thanks!
Homz Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Sorry. I don't know the answer of your question, but I did want to say those are some great looking guitars.

Riffster Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Gibson uses CTS pots (I do not know what the new standards have), the quality of the pots is really good but since Gibson uses 300K linear on the volume and 500K audio on the tone things can get muddy or your are missing out on some treble. (I know some models use 500K all around, historics maybe?) I replaced the pots on my Explorer with CTS pots from www.RSGuitarworks.net, I changed the volume control to 500K using one of their "superpots" and it is quite something. Highest quality you can get. Unless you have issues I would leave the tone pots alone...

[/quote'] I just don't think that Lindys will work with cheap-*** low quality guitars like yours. Just joking, you got some awesome stuff there, bro! Maybe you would dig the 50's wiring?
HeadCase Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 I'd only change one thing at a time, otherwise you won't know where the difference came from. Try the pickups first... Nice guitars.

T50 Posted December 22, 2008 Author Posted December 22, 2008 I just don't think that Lindys will work with cheap-*** low quality guitars like yours. Hey man' date=' I had to drive a Ford Festiva for years to save up $ to buy these guitars! Just kidding, although I do miss that car sometimes... Maybe you would dig the 50's wiring? ???

That's exactly why I was looking into new pots for the new pickups... Thanks a lot for the link!!! Do I need a long shaft pots or short ones for LP? Something tells me to go with the long ones...
Homz Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 I have to say. It makes me want to cry that your putting open face pick ups in that beautiful guitar.
deepblue Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 T50....Those are some sweet looking Lesters!

T50 Posted December 22, 2008 Author Posted December 22, 2008 I have to say. It makes me want to cry that your putting open face pick ups in that beautiful guitar. I know what you mean. The yellow LP on the left already has a set of covered pickups on. It looks better than the way it is in the pic. But on the tobacco burst, I think a set of zebra will look just fine!
Riffster Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 You are welcome. LPs use long shafts... I would actually leave the existing pickups and change the pots then after trying that then you can replace the pickups and do a true comparison. Soldering the caps to the tone pots instead of the volume works much better too, I am not sure but that may be what they refer to as 50's wiring. After upgrading my Explorer, I am planning to replace the volume pots on my LP down the road, it just makes the controls more usable, especially on the neck pickup.
