zachd33 Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 First of all, I plan on taking my guitar in to my local guitar shop, and testing all 3 of the amps. I play a lot of metal, classic rock, and some blues, and also hate my current amp (Line sux Spider Valve). I am planning on selling it and adding some cash to get a better amp, and plan on buying pedals. I have a Gibson Les Paul VM. So which would be best for me?
FennRx Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 save up more for the mesa express5:25 for your metal, throw your MT-2 in front of it. done and done.

Classic Rock and blues will sound good with the fender, but so will the Vox. Of course it also depends on the guitar you have. I like fender.
SRV-Zeppelin Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 I voted for the AC30, but only because Marshall wasn't an option. Vox is probably a good choice for you, though, considering your playing style. Good luck!
Thundergod Posted December 21, 2008 Posted December 21, 2008 Save for the AC30... for metal either a MT-2 from boss or the bulldog distortion from VOX... just take a look at this baby (sorry about the amp porn... I just couldnt help it...)

I am getting one for x-mas but I just have a cheap pair of sony headphones.

I am getting one for x-mas but I just have a cheap pair of sony headphones. If I may add my 2 cents.....I use DJ style headphones. They will take more abuse. High fidelity h/p's are very sensitive and can be damged if the music is too loud. I use Sony ( I forgot the model...Ill get it later ) *update* The headphones I use are Sony MDR-V500
Homz Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 I gota go with the ac15. that 30 puts out alot of dbs'. I have trouble getting my 15 up to break up point at reasonable volume levels while practicing in my home. If you play out alot maybe the 30 is the way to go. If not get the 15. BTW that dlx is also a great amp. I know a few people who love them.

As deepblue said, you can buy DJ headphones, most wont be cheap either but they sound very... REAL, unlike small (and cheap) headphones. Plenty of mids and lows, unlike cheap and small headphones. So here's the same question: are you getting the amplug and headphones for portability and price? Becasue a pair of good headphones will increase the amount of money you spend and decrease the set's portability. It is a very good practice tool anyway.
Thundergod Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Oh... and +1 for Homz... I voted AC30 but he does make a good point: 30 all tube watts is a lot.

I am getting the amplug because I don't like my amp, and was looking for a cool semi cheap xmas gift. I am buying the headphones myself and look to go no higher than around 120$. Portabliity really isnt a factor for me, its just mostly for jamming in my room late at night, my amp doesnt have a headphone jack.
surfpup Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 If you play a lot of metal then none of these are a great choice My thoughts exactly. Wouldn't something like this be more metal?
zachd33 Posted December 22, 2008 Author Posted December 22, 2008 My thoughts exactly. Wouldn't something like this be more metal? Metal is just one part of what I do. Those kind of amps (mesa, Krank, Line sux) seem to me like just for metal amps, and I don't want that. I just want to be able to achive a metal sound with pedals, but I want a good clean sound. I never seem to get an amp with a good clean sound. So I'm gonna go with something that I know has a good clean sound this time and worry about metal and distortion through pedals.

So dont spend more than 50 or 60 bucks... for playing guitar you wont notice the difference. http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Sennheiser-HD-555-Headphones?sku=241474 http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Sennheiser-HD-280-Headphones?sku=241467 http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Sennheiser-HD-515-Headphones?sku=241473 http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Sennheiser-HD280-Pro-ClosedBack-Headphones?sku=242411 http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Sennheiser-HD-212-Pro-High-Impact-Sealed-Headphones?sku=242407 http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Sennheiser-HD-202-Intense-Stereo-Headphones?sku=242412 http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Sennheiser-HD201-Pro-Closed-Back-Headphones?sku=242417 And here's an AKG pair... just so people dont think I work for sennheiser. http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/AKG-K77-Headphones?sku=241836
zachd33 Posted December 22, 2008 Author Posted December 22, 2008 thanx everyone, I now have a better idea of what I want to do, but still wanna try each amp out first. And also thanx on the headphone info, I'm bout to go get a new pair today!!
Homz Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Hey man you can come over here and play my ac15. I think your only a little over an hour away. You can also use our other guitar players Blues Jr.. Drop me an e mail and I send you directions.
Murph Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 And don't think Mesa's are only for metal. I don't play ANY metal. But I love the quality of Mesa amps. They are, if nothing else, the MOST "tweakable" amps built. Best of luck. Murph.

deepblue Posted December 23, 2008 Posted December 23, 2008 I use sennheiser headphones Sweet headphones!....Sennheiser & Bose are the best...In my opinion.
