j45nick
$4K ... seriously, for that money just go vintage and buy the real deal. That Luthier's Choice guitar seems overpriced to me. The Legend looks like a good value, since as far as I can tell, it has exactly the same build specs: adi top, all-hide glue, and superb detailing. My L-OO Legend is just about my favorite guitar. Same construction details as the original 1937, but the plus of a new build that should last indefinitely. I looked at a lot of vintage L-OO's before buying the Legend, and most needed some work of one type or another, for a lot more money. I love vintage, but occasionally newer guitars are a better choice, at least for me.
Ridgemont
The L-00 Legend is one of the best guitars I have ever tried. Massive neck though. 1&3/4" nut is fine, but it is on a massive V neck. That being said, I would learn to live with it.

I agree with others the Luthier's Choice does not appear to be much of a bargain price wise. For that kind of scratch you would think it was built with old growth red spruce top or something. rar
I agree with others the Luthier's Choice does not appear to be much of a bargain price wise. For that kind of scratch you would think it was built with old growth red spruce top or something. You'd almost think that the top was hand-built by Ren -- that he thickness-sanded the top so that it would have just the right stiffness given the stiffness of the spruce, that he hand-sawed and hand-scalloped the braces from specially selected Adi spruce, then hide-glued the bracing to the top, etc. -- in his shop at home. And you'd be right. That said, the dealer is going to make a tidy profit on this guitar if he gets close to the asking price. Most dealers offered them for much less. The whole point of the Five Star specials was that Gibson set the list much lower than you'd pay to get the same guitar as a one-off custom -- getting Ren to do this much work on your guitar was expensive -- and nevertheless made the dealer's price a smaller-than-standard percentage of the list. They're intended to be a little gift to the Five Star dealers: an exclusive model, attractively priced, that the dealer can sell at 40%-off list and still make a reasonable ROI. -- Bob R

C.1934 L-00 eBay $3250 - while I personally would be happy to have it, of course, and get any work needed on it, friends and relatives would look at me and think I had finally cracked - and TOH's old man would take it and paint it! And I can't see Nick appreciating the missing wood on the top lower bout..... http://www.ebay.com/itm/ORIGINAL-1934-GIBSON-L-00-SOME-OLD-REPAIRS-ORIGINAL-FINISH-SOUNDS-MARVELOUS-/261264075561?pt=Guitar&hash=item3cd48d6b29 BluesKing777. Yeah, I looked at that listing, and figured it needed frets, and was well on its way to a neck re-set. It would need to sound awfully good and play really well to justify the original cost plus the repairs. I've saved a fair number of orphans in my time, so maybe I'm just getting jaded in my old age. I also couldn't figure out how the top of the guitar got so chewed up, unless someone was using it for a canoe paddle.

zombywoof
One big advantage of the vintage guitar: You go to sell the Luthier's Choice instrument in a year and take a big bath. You go to sell the Legend guitar in a year and take a bath but not quite as big a one. You go to sell the vintage instrument in a year and break even. BluesKing777
Maybe some rich Forum member should buy all three guitars and do a sound/price comparison in a couple of years time for us? I guess it won't be me doing the buying, but I will be listening! BluesKing777.

Since they don't seem to be building many if any L-OO Legends these days, I think you've got a reasonable chance of not losing your shirt if you buy it second-hand, as I did, at a decent price. It's the original buyer of the new guitar that takes the real beating. They are just one fine guitar, and I'll probably keep this one for a long time. It would take a really special guitar for me to buy new. The only one I was considering was the banner SJ Kalamazoo Gals edition that JT thought Gibson was going to build. That would probably have been a lifetime keeper. I'm pretty selective in what I buy, and I'm price sensitive as well.

BluesKing777
I still think it would be worth buying one of each - I may one day. I would be able to look at the bare wood on the eBay one if I had a newish L-00 Legend next to it! Our Aust. Dollar Exchange rate has gone to hell lately - good news and bad news - I bought some nice Gibsons and Nationals while the Aus Dollar was around the $US1.10, and now it is hovering around $US90-92 depending on economic news of the day, which means my earlier purchases are now worth approximately 20% more (On Paper Only), but of course any future buys will be, not happening......probably.... It is a lot of money, but all relevant to other things in your life. Guitars/guitar playing are my love and unless we are buying that Pre-War Martin D18, (Not), the bill I got from a solicitor for trying to get money owed to me over a car was more than the price of 2 L-00s and they didn't get any money for me......... And while I am on the car analogy, a new car here is worth about 30-35% less as you drive it away from the Car Showroom. On $50,000, that kind of loss could mean FOUR L-00s. Can you see where this thought process is heading? Justification to TOH..............flimsy, I know..... All hot air and GAS because I have to shift a few Guitars I have grown out of before I can fit a single extra item in my music room! BluesKing777. onewilyfool
By the way, here is my L-20 and '23 L-2, showing a 12 fret and !13!!! fret neck for consideration!!
onewilyfool
by the way......remember the L-1 is a REALLY SMALL GUITAR!! For those of you used to Jumbos.....it might be a little bit of a dissappointment.....sound wise. My L-2 is REALLY small, and has the 13 fret neck and a 24 1/4" scale length.....it is almost a toy......but has a really unique sound.....I know, archtop vrs flat top....but small guitars have this plunky sound, that I like but many may be dissappointed....here is an example of the L-
