Tried the Gibson J-200 strings on my Epiphone EJ-200

Hey guys, I just switched strings on my ej-200 and put on my first pack of the Gibson j-200 stings(13-56). I was extremely blown away. The volume and thud now coming from this guitar is ridiculous compared to when it was setup and had new strings put on. I was actually very disappointed when I took her for a setup and got her back and she sounded pretty dead. I understands it's an epiphone but still I was let down. I realize in time the sound and thud will fade but I will buy these stings for now on for this particular guitar. I'm sold on them so far.

I'm pretty sure the J-200 strings are the same as the Masterbuilt Premiums except for the wrapped string ends. I suspect the real improvement you found may have come from going to medium strings.

On the Epiphone forum, Bob Issac pointed out that Gibson was finally packaging the 80/20 strings Bozeman uses when they setup guitars for shipping (the Gibson Gear page calls them BOTH Gibson Masterbuilt 80/20 Brass and Gibson 80/20 Bronze). Gibson has said for a while that they ship guitars with a proprietary string, and not the strings they package for retail (Masterbuilt Phosphor Bronze), so these appear to be it. Has anyone Masterbuilt 80/20's, and how do they compare with the Masterbuilt Phosphor Bronze strings?

Gibson in their usual way have created a bit of confusion. A lot of the web site product spec pages state many of the acoustics are fitted with Masterbuilt Premium strings. But they do not qualify which. The Phosphors or the 80/20's.

When I recently got my J-45 Amberburst there was a spare set of strings inside, the Masterbuit Premium 80/20's. On the packet Gibson state these are the same strings that are factory fitted to their acoustics.

So, unless someone can check with Gibson this is not fully clarified. If they do now fit 80/20's, then when did that start?

They've been doing the 80/20s since 2011, maybe a bit earlier. The trouble is that Nashville (both Marketing and Customer Service) has been giving out wrong information about the factory-original strings for years. No matter how many times people point this out here on the forum, some folks cling to the idea that, because they got the information "from Gibson", it must be right. Fact is, the people in Nashville has no idea what's going on in Bozeman (and that's the way they like it up there).

Dennis told me that the main purpose of including the extra set of strings with new guitars, explicitly labeled "these are what we use", was to eliminate the confusion once and for all. I guess it's not working out quite as well as he hoped.

If you think on it, this is an issue that seems to crop up often, people love the initial sound, then post here and on other forums 'What strings did my Gibson ship with?', so it's clearly in Gibson's interest to supply the correct info in a clean manner. Who wants a whole episode of buying & trying a plethora of string options just trying to get to where they were originally?

These are the business fumbles of amateurs. The very least anyone should expect of a company of this size is accessible and correct product specs & info, an up-to-date website and clarity with customer follow-up questions. Lets be honest, asking someone somewhat in the know to trawl this forum for a day, compile the most often asked questions, draft an informative FAQ and post it on the website would take anyone who wasn't dead or extremely dense 2-3 days tops. That 2-3 days worth of work would clear up so many issues for potential and repeat customers if well presented on the website.
