gearbasher Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 I consider myself a very observant individual, especially when it come to my instruments. Today, I noticed the center/top seam of my '95 SJ-45 Deluxe is very "noticeable". By this, I mean you can see and feel the seam. There is definitely no crack. Even the lacquer shows no checking on the seam (there is light checking on other spots on the top). I looked with a Jewelers loupe, no crack in the wood or lacquer. I have to say, this guitar has the thinnest coat of nitro I've ever seen. I can see practically all the grain on the back and sides. Am I paranoid? Or is this a sign of trouble to come?
Pickax Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 What is your humidity level in the house? Might just be dry.
Jerry K Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 Thin is good. Don't treat it with kid gloves, unless it is for investment/collecting. If you are going to play it, it's going to get bashed up over the years. Look upon those little blemishes as marks of distinction. Mojo.
gearbasher Posted December 22, 2008 Author Posted December 22, 2008 What is your humidity level in the house? Might just be dry. I'm pretty anal about keeping them humidified. The digital hydrometer in the case says it's presently at 44%. And' date=' a straightedge across the top shows a perfect "graceful" arch. Thin is good. Don't treat it with kid gloves, unless it is for investment/collecting. If you are going to play it, it's going to get bashed up over the years. Look upon those little blemishes as marks of distinction. Mojo. I don't mind finish checking. I think guitars look great that way. In fact, I've thought of purposely checking the top on this instrument. I just don't want any wood cracks.
sfden1 Posted December 22, 2008 Posted December 22, 2008 I have two old guitars and both show the same thing. They've lasted 60+ years, so I doubt you have anything to worry about.
