Anyone ever try single coil

So I have an epiphone sg I want to try a neck position single coil fender pickup in. They sell a converter humbucker to single coil online. I really would not do this to my gibson sg, but am curious. I like the sound of a strat in the neck position, but love the playability of sg's. Less and different wood on an SG, probably would not be as deep of a tone? So any thoughts or comments?

My Strats weigh from 3.1 to 3.8 kilograms, my all-mahogany SGs from 3.1 to 3.4 kilograms, and my maple-bodied SG Supra has 3.8 kilograms. So the ranges seem to overlap a bit.

I think that the SG perhaps will sound a little bit smoother than a Strat, with less sparkle and increased upper midrange instead. But this also will depend on strings. However, the difference in scale length would slightly shift the sound into the same direction when using the same strings.

I don't really think you can think of something that somebody hasn't done, at least 30 years ago or more. I do remember some guys putting singles in a variety of Gibsons when I was a kid. Honestly, it doesn't ever work out the way you think it will. The only guitar with that woody, stratty snap up front is a Strat, so I'd recoggest saving up and having an SG for SG sounds and a Stracaster for Strat sounds. You will be a happier guitar player.

Hello!

"My life fades. The vision dims. All that remains are memories. I remember a time of chaos. Ruined dreams. This wasted land. But most of all, I remember The Road Warrior. The man we called Frank Marino..."

He has 3 single coil pickups the Strat-way in His SG with a purpose-built pickguard.

Check out His records. ;)

I have a Duncan Jazz in the neck of my Les Paul Special... Lowered to level with the pup ring. With the right pick attack, you would be shocked just how close to a strat neck sound it can be.... Seriously.

I also split it but is sounds closer in full bucker mode. I'll try to do a clip asap to give you an idea of how it sounds.

You can try the narrow strat style single coil along with the adapters & engineering to make it fit, or......

Why not just use the Gibby P90 single coil? There are P90 replacements for HBs that will drop right in. It has a slightly different tone from the strat pickup but it isn't dramatic. The tone pots can be replaced to make it more strat like. The P90 SGs sound great. Just like back in the day.....

Also, there's now the P-Rails HB/P90/Rails combination pickup from Seymour Duncan that is tailor made for the SG. You can have P90 tones, a variety of HB tones, and a Rail single coil tone. And combinations upon combinations. They are very impressive.

Happy Choosing

To my ears P90s sound great and similar to Fender Jazzmaster single coils but very different from a typical Strat single coil. I think the P90s sound great in my Weimann Blues Bird (rare semi-hollowbody with through neck), and I for sure wouldn't want Fender Strat style pickups in it.

The HB/P90/Rails combination must be very interesting, wasn't able to check out one up to now.

Thanks to all for the comments. I ordered the humbucker to single coil adapter. Just trying to figure out best single coil. Looking at Dimarzio heavy blues 2 possibly. Thinking need more bass since the single coil sg on youtube sounds very high pitched even in the neck position.
