Elixirs 80/20 Lights on a slope shoulder

I just put a new set of strings on yesterday. Maybe these are good for resonant rosewood-y OM fingerstyle guitars, but my J50 sounds muddy. It is telling me not to dress it up in a lavender 1970s suit with a polyester shirt for Sunday school ever again. Ugh. Tomorrow they come off!

Back to the DR Sunbeams or EJ16s.

My SJ doesn't like them either, but the Elixer Nano-Web 80/20 Mediums sure like living tuned down one whole step on the JB. Part of the reason they will likely remain is the sensitivity of the Trance pickup. The coated Elixers help minimize the string screech from my still sloppy playing style when I plug in.

Hi Sal,

I tried to like Elixers. They just never worked for me. 80/20s in general only live on the rosewood guitar at my house. My J 50 likes Phospher Bronze. If you like the Sunbeams you might also like Pyramid Country Westerns.

Newtone Masterclass suited my J 50 really well, but they became hard to find.

Funny I was browsing the stringsdirect site the other day and seen the new tones seem to be back available .

Like you I tried them years ago and recall liking them but I had a d28 at the time. They're on the list of ones to try

Never put 80/20's on a mahogany slope and have no intention as PB's sound good on them, but my rosewood AJ really likes 80/20's.

I did try again just to see if something changed 80/20's on my HB TV and like when I first got her when she came stock with 80/20's I was shocked how much tone the Bird lost and basically all the complexity and nectar disappeared.

My experience with Elixirs, and some other strings, is to not judge too soon. Give them a couple of days to settle in, then decide.

I'd give them a couple of weeks, or break them in on a "TONERITE" for a couple of days....THEN....they hit their stride....the jangly will leave, and they will last a LOOOOOONG time!!
