Aster & buliwyf, I don't have iron horses. My wife and I have real horses. [smile] I don't hide buying a guitar from my wife, but I only have three. But the cost of a guitar is so inexpensive compared to a horse. It's just insignificant. Of course, a horse is a lot harder to hide!! [rolleyes]

I get too excited about new guitars to keep them from her, but now anytime I say anything to her that starts with "Guess What?" she guesses, "You bought another guitar". Unfortunately she is usually wrong.

Not only does mine know about all of them, she bought many of them and can tell you what year and make each one is and how many coils of wire are on each bobbin. [thumbup]

@ Bender 4 life: I concur that the Elitist Casino would be the better choice.I have the 1965 John Lennon and the day I got it,it took a tied spot with my 1965 Strat as being my favourite guitar.Every aspect of the Casino speaks superior quality. The second I put my hand around the neck I realized that it was the most comfortable guitar neck that I had ever held-even better than my vintage Hagstroms, which are well known for their fabulously slim and comfortable necks. The P-90s in the Elitist and the John Lennons are just incredible and when played clean the sound from them rings out like chimes, yet when you play aggressively through an overdriven amp the pickups can produce very raw snarling tones that can really add to a raunchy rock song or blistering blues riffs.I don't recall ever seeing a negative comment about the Elitist and other top of the line Casinos.Having said that though I have an Indonesian made Casino with a natural finish that is just incredible for a $550 guitar and it puts other guitars in its price range to shame.

@ buliwyf and Aster 1 re the Harley Sportster: My daughter just bought her first bike-a 2009 Harley 883-that was pampered like a spoiled baby.I tried to talk her into getting a smaller,"learner" bike for now and buy a Harley when she was comfortable and confident about her riding and handling of a bike. She had her heart set on a Harley and there was no swaying her,so she bought it and now finds that the guy who owned it was quite a bit taller than her 5'2" with a much longer reach, consequently her first accessory for the bike will be a new set of handle bars.Anyway when she came home for a 10 day visit a couple of weeks ago,she had the Harley in the back of her truck and went on several runs with her uncle-my brother in law-who has a very much bigger 2011 Harley to get some pointers. So far she has dropped the bike twice because she has to over reach so much, but she's catching on fast.I just hope that she gets her new handle bars soon.

My wife knows like nothing about guitars so I could pull it off, but I only have 2 electric guitars and she obviously knows them. I'm pretty sure she'd notice if there were 3.

I do keep bugging her for an ES-335 as an anniversary gift, but I don't think that'll happen anytime soon.

Ha ha ha ha ha!

I now have an agreement in my house! If I want a new guitar I have to sell or swap one! [unsure]

That said I managed to sneak in a Marshall AFD 100 and swap it for my Marshall VM... She never noticed! [tongue]

A cupla points from an old guy.

My wife played bass a cupla years well enough to get by with simple bass playing with good rhythm on it. That ended '79 when we went into another life.

To prove she understands the concept of instrument ownership, unlike "Notes" and wife, mine didn't like it at all back then when I used her Precision to do a fill-in bass gig that was over her head. That was the one and only time I played her bass. She sold it long ago. She never tried to play one of my guitars, or even to touch one other than to case or uncase it for me and then, only under duress <grin>. For what it's worth, maybe only two or three times a year do drive each others' Jeeps. We don't touch the other's firearms. Other than that and clothing (excluding some foul weather gear), it's all pretty much "community property."

"Setup" on guitars, cars and firearms are pretty personal if you think about it. We both have quite different "setup" perspectives.

I don't think she ever counted guitars. We had about a 20-year economic dry spell I didn't buy any guitars and just one inexpensive amp in that time. Some since then. She knows that even were I to become "rich," I'd never spend more than $1,000 (and almost certainly many hundreds less) on a guitar I hadn't played, and that finding time/place to find one of that price range is about as likely as catching a ride to Mars. Last Christmas I got her a new short-scale bass and a practice amp - haven't had time to work with her on it and frankly her job is kinda the same way this year. So... later.

OTOH, she does NOT like to hear me complaining about stuff I swapped for that I wish I still had, so basically swapping ain't being done except for cars.

Edit: Hmmm... just got to thinking. We have our own batches of cameras, each set up for how we "see." We'll occasionally swap back and forth if needed, but it's kinda a pain. Ditto computers each has set up as we each prefer. I do some software "fixing" for her occasionally. We both have three or four apiece at home and work. (I actually have more, but some need setting up at a desk where I can use their kinda specialized but obsolete hardware.)

YOU are the really lucky duck here.......

I only dream of riding nowadays 'cause my Doc said, "1 more good jolt & you'll probably be paralyzed."

nothing finer than heading to the hills on a cool spring morning on horseback.

Nice look'n Iron Head 54ci man! Love the shock gaters on those too!

Oh, but I do have to "hide" motorcycles. By that I mean my wife told me I'd have to get rid of either my Sporty or my Softail Deluxe to get the Road King Classic. I told her I couldn't do that. Then about a month later an opportunity came up from the dealership to have another shot at the Road King in the copper 105th Annie bike. She said "well, you should probably get it, but you can only keep 2 in the garage at the house at any one time!" I told her "no prob., I'll keep one in the offices warehouse!" [biggrin] She knows I have three, but if she only sees 2 in the garage then she's happy.

My Sportster is old school looking in this paint scheme but is a 2005.

Bender, I don't hide any guitars from my wife. I just don't broadcast that they are brand new ones either! I show them to her and ask "isn't this a pretty (fill in the blank feature) on this guitar?" She says yes most often and gives me slack I guess.

She's a good gal and I try hard to take really good care of her too!! [thumbup]

And I do realize and appreciate the fact that I'm "the really lucky duck here......."

But we don't trail ride out horses. We show them ( $$$ [crying] )

Bad deal about your not being able to ride. I've been bucked off so many times I hate to think what my x-ray would look like! I was having major back pains in April/May and was flat on my back in bed just about the entire month of April. I couldn't practice that entire two months. I figured it was related to that but turned out it was something else.

Mrs. G doesn't know "all" of my guitars, only that I have "a lot". She also knows that if and when I buy a new toy, she gets some bling of her choice of equal value. She likes it when I buy new stuff [biggrin]

My ex-wife got so upset when I bought the 50th anniversary Stratocaster, she went out and bought a new car, almost 10 times the cost of the guitar. After that, I definitely slowed my roll and lied when I had to. We are now divorced and my new girlfriend cannot tell the difference between different models. She also never bothers to criticize when I buy a new one.

Can I trade my wife for your new girlfriend [biggrin]. Seriously my wife is major hot on what I buy, and don't buy. Maybe that's a good thing, I would probably ruin us financially if she didn't. [omg][lol]

Does my wife know about all my guitars...she does now. This post cracks me up due to a recent event. We have been unusually humid here in the Rockies (45-50%) for a few weeks so I got all the gits out of their cases and had them all on hangers or stands in my music room for a few days. One day my wife went into the music room to get something and from the kitchen I heard "holy $**t". Now I came running thinking a dog had knocked a guitar off a stand or some other horror only to find her standing there shaking her head. When she saw me she asked "how many guitars do you have anyway"? I reminded her she had seen every one many times and was there when every one came home over the last 40 years. She admitted she knew that but had never seen them all at once. Her conclusion was she doesn't have enough toys...and some serious shopping is in order. It could have been worse, but I think I need to keep GAS in check for a little while, well unless a special SG comes along ;-)

My ex wife told me that if I bought any more guitars without telling her first, she would leave,

So on the way down to pick up one of my new Gibsons, I was kind enough to stop by the U-Haul place and bought her some moving boxes.

I no longer have that problem

Think you are pretty well able to read respectively hear out the signs

My former wife's countdown to divorcement somehow depended on my musical ambitions, too, but she just looked to find any reasons when deciding to leave me, and those about me making music were more marginal I believe when looking back.

But however, everybody should follow one's own preferences I believe. ;)

RE: girl/boyfriend or spousal ultimatums that "either this or I go."

That was a great thing for me. I think the girlfriend at the time was kinda shocked when my response to her "You gotta quit the band or I'm gone," was, "Good bye." One ultimatum caved into will lead to a lifelong habit.

FYI, I've said the same thing to women friends if their boyfriends/spouses pulled the same game.

Music content? Yup. I was working average 60-hour weeks, training 10-12 hours a week and playing three nights a week in saloons. She lived outa town and came back for weekends to her folks mostly to see your's truly.

Funny thing, if she'd said, "You gotta quit the band 'cuz the pace is killing you," I'd have hadda agreed. Less than a month later that's exactly what I did.

So... I have a wife of many years who first was a great friend - and we still are.

My wife jokes about my hearing...."Ever since you got back with the band, you can't hear a thing!"

I got back with some of my old bandmates and some other guys in 2007 to do a concert in support of the release of a book on the bands of the SF Bay Area in the 60's.

That was it..... I practiced about 6 months....and did exactly ONE show.

My wife didn't know me when I played in the band, (she would have been WAY too young).

My ears are shot...... R & R band as a kid; 20+ years in an automotive factory, and 2 years in the Army Artillery....but since I'm getting older and my

hearing is getting worse and worse...she likes to blame "the band".

All in good fun!!
