pkorte
Hi CS Serial number "Gibson Custom Mahogany Explorer" was in production 2008-2010? In same time and later there has been also reissue serial number "Gibson Custom 1958 Mahogany Explorer" in procuction. Does anybody know, what is the difference between these models? For example: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/gibson-custom-mahogany-explorer-electric-guitar/527156 http://www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/gibson-custom-1958-mahogany-explorer-vos-electric-guitar
cjsinla
According to the specs on those sites, the "58" has ceramic high-output pickups and the other one has '57's which would have a brighter tone IMHO. Not sure why they would put modern pickups on the '58 and vintage style '57 pups on the other one. That would be the main difference that I can see from here. Bridges might be the same, can't tell for sure, and the tuners are a little different.

pkorte
Hi I think tuners are same too, vintage Tulips. I do have the first model, without "1958". Ceramics are not the best mics for the "reissue" 1958 version, I think ;) There is also 1958 VOS version in production, which have custom busckers and VOS finish. VOS model does have also 59' neck. Should it be called 1959 model therefore?
pkorte
Hi Now I found something. I think mahogany explorer in this thread is the "Gibson Custom Mahogany Explorer": http://www.lespaulforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=165711 I have just the same guitar only in different color (ebony). - 58' bodyshape and pickguard - 58' neck and headstock (right angle also) - ABR-1 bridge and aluminium tailpiece - 57 Classic pickups - gloss finish (not VOS) - 58' routing - wiring with vintage style shielded wires - long neck tenon, ends between pickups - black Gibson Custom case with purple inside - real rosewood fingerboard
