markwillplay
I tried these strings a while back on my red line slope and thought I liked them a lot. I decided to try some JP true meds (phosphor bronze) and liked them as well. They did not last like the monel strings did and I will get into the sound in a minute. I then went to my trusty elixirs in med gauge and then mixed gauges (like true medium) and felt that they were stiffer than the pearse and certainly stiffer than the monel. Here is the kicker though, I took the good elixirs off (they were fairly new..I know expensive) and put the monels on right behind them. No comparison for me. the monels intonate better (not sure why, but they do) and they sounded way better to my ear. A complete difference. Gave the guitar a much warmer sound than I had initially thought because I did not do a direct comparison. They played so much softer and had that sort of warm "brush" sound when strumming. Some folks might not like that, but I love it. I have put them on all my guitars and I guess my ear just likes them because they all sound better. Most of the time, I can't tell that much difference from string set to string set...but with these, I can, and I like. They seem to last much longer than any phosphor bronze string I have used. duluthdan
I tried the TR Monels on a Southern Jumbo, an did not like. On my D-18 they are superb. Thinking about installing a set on the J-200 - but that is such an articulate maple guitar I wonder if I'll get too much. Worth a shot, I suppose. I do like the softer tension. The J-200 has pretty high action, but prefers a light almost gossamer like touch - and I'm a fretboard masher. Later: Ok just put a set on the J-200. the world didn't move, but they sound alright- I agree with you, a brush like quality in the strumming. Like them better thn the John Pearse strings that were there - a bit less tension on an already high action guitar.
Hall
I hadn't used Monels since yesteryear, but because my memory had a plus sign in the margin I sent for them upon their rebirth. By all means to each his own, but I put them on a D18 of mine and wasn't happy. I went back to Pearse the same day. I suppose I should have given them a more equitable hearing, but I was bummed at both the feel and the tone, so I bailed real quick. I'm sure the Monels will get another chance here soon enough. For now I have eleven sets sitting in waiting! Since you guys like them, how about another word on them 'down the road apiece'.
zombywoof
There have been some interesting discussions on these strings here and in other forums. If I recall opinions were pretty divided. Yeah, I know, what else is new.
