1934 Original Jumbo

Had the opportunity to play one of these yesterday at one of my local Gibson dealers. I thought I had played some guitars with huge necks, like Fender's Nocasters and Gibson's 50's style necks. To use the phrase "baseball bat" would not do the neck on this guitar justice. It was, by far, the largest neck on ANY guitar I have ever played. But man, what a sound this thing produced, as big and bold as the neck. Even if I could afford it, the neck was way too big for me to play comfortably. Maybe that's a good thing, I probably would have tried to figure out which kidney I could sell to buy it. And, the sunburst finish on it was one of the best I had ever seen, even the sides had a burst finish. If you ever get a chance to play one, don't pass it up, it's a great guitar.

I reently acquired a Martin 1937 D-18 Authentic. It has a large neck. Took some getting used to, but now everything is okee dokee. From what I have heard - this guitar is one difficult beast to walk away from - I avoided playing the one up at Homecoming this year only because I knew it would haunt me.

Hey, lots of folks can go their whole lives without ever even seeing one of these. Like the original AJs, there is just nothing like it out there today.

Maybe the title of my post was misleading, woof, I played Gibson's reissue of the '34, not the real deal....

I have not played the reissue, but our '35 Jumbo does not have a particularly big neck for a mid 30s guitar. In fact for the three guitars I restrung last night -- 35 Jumbo, 35 D-28 and 38 D18 -- it was the smallest. It does have a v contour.

Let's pick,

Nope, I'm not Jeremy.....I'll say it again, the 34 Original Jumbo RI that I played has, by far, the biggest neck on any guitar I have ever played....

If you don't mind a little wear & tear, and neglect- I mean "mojo", they can be found for less than the price of a new J-35. This one with a clean crack with what the seller describes as Adirondack recently sold on eBay:

eBay OJ

I suppose it would have the neck profile you are describing(?)

Hey, I thought I'd offer my experience

I have a 2008 "True Vintage" Original Jumbo, one of about 12 made I think.

It's got that controversial Madigascar Rosewood, (which I think is why there where so few made..)

Adi Top, Mahogany sides and back.

The neck is friggen huge; its V profile reminds me of a piano leg....

but it was the best sounding acoustic I've ever heard, so I bought it on the spot.

I'ts my #1 guitar and I have played and traveled with it for years....I'd be happy to answer any questions.

Ya never know, Dan; it might reappear at this year's Homecoming! [thumbup]

There are only 2 things that scare me about homecoming this year, that OJ, and the '41 D-28A that might be hanging on the wall at MV. I suppose I should secure my slot this year with G'Strummer, and start saving my nickels. It may be an agonizing winter trying to decide on what leaves to honor my limit of 5. The 200 got a workout last night jamming with some of John Denver's old band mates, the SJ will go to an event I'm playing outside Denver this Saturday - that leaves vulnerable the J-45, the JB and the 18 A. Not sure it can be done.
