LarryUK
I live on my own with my two dogs. Recently I've been getting bites on my ankles and arms. I presumed it was from walking the dogs in the park. But since I've been off with a slipped disc in my back, I've still had them, but I've not been walking the dogs. So, I'm beginning to think I have some sort of mite in the house. I know it's not bed bugs or fleas on the dogs. I sometimes feel like I have something on me, but look and there's nothing to see. Do you get tiny mites that bite? eg, mange from dogs or fox mites? I'm in the UK. How do I treat it?

Do you get tiny mites that bite? eg, mange from dogs or fox mites? I'm in the UK. How do I treat it? Sounds like fleas to me. 99 times out of 100 you feel a flea it vanishes when you look. They tend to bite ankles and arms on humans. What makes you think it's not fleas? I ask because if the answer is that the dogs are treated then there's something you might not know... At the moment there is a wave of fleas in the UK that are immune to one of the common chemicals used in flea treatment. I forget the name of it but it's the one in Frontline (and many others). Easy solution, ask in the pet shop, they'll know about it and sell you some flea treatment with one of the other chemicals in it. Then treat carpet and soft furnishing and wash all your clothes in one weekend. Job done. If you're sure it's not fleas for some other reason I've no idea. LarryUK
I don't think it's fleas because my dogs haven't got them. They're staffies and you can see they have no bites. I'll treat my stuff for fleas and see how it goes.
RowdyMoon
Sounds like fleas to me too......flea bath the dogs and spray any areas they lay...because if it gets out of hand it's a nightmare...just sayin
Pin
I'll lay odds on its fleas. It certainly sounds like it. If you're anything like me at all mate then you won't see fleas for love nor money. When we had our dogs, my Mrs could seemingly spot 'em from two miles away and she'd point them out to me. Could I see 'em? Could I heck. If they are fleas then not only will the dogs need repeated treatments but the house will need to be powdered too. The hot weather we have been having won't have helped. LarryUK
I did wonder if it was the UK Government. They've taken everything else. They might want our blood now!
IanHenry
I did wonder if it was the UK Government. They've taken everything else. They might want our blood now! Well they are already talking about making organ donning compulsory, so maybe they could drain what's left?
Bender 4 Life
to check for fleas, lay a piece of white paper in your floor & watch it for a while....fleas LOVE the color white for some reason. a good rubdown on your bitten areas with a mild bleach-water solution will clear up the bites FAST ! btoth76
Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is the cure for Your problem. Collect some flowers. Make small bags from cotton rags of size of a fist. Fill them with the flowers. Put these bags into Your wardrobe, and below the blanket of Your bed during the day. It will chase away those bugs and leave a very pleasant scent. Cheers... Namvet
Treat carpets & furniture for fleas. They may not be on your pets but they could be everywhere else.
btoth76
They nest in textiles: clothes and bed sheets. Probably, You have noticed, it gets worser when You go to sleep. Being a dog-keeper too, I've already went through this. :) Cheers... Bence

buliwyf
Take your dogs to a pond, lake or slow running river.Put about a 12 in stick in each of the dogs mouths and slowly back the dogs into the water until just their heads are sticking out.Now check the sticks and see if any fleas are on them.Fleas hate water and will jump on the stick to stay dry. OK sorry I couldnt resist but if they have fleas we put on some orange smelling stuff just below their necks and rub it down their backs a bit it does a great job, dont remember the name but we order it from a catalog.Fleas a sneaky little sh*t's and very hard to locate so you also might try spraying some kind of furniture flea remover thats made right on your furniture and see what happens,Believe me I know your problem we have 3 giant dogs.Good luck. Not only that - water kills flea larva so now you just have to deal with the live ones.
daveinspain
So, was it fleas after all?
bonzoboy
It sounds like fleas to me too.Fleas are sometimes very hard to spot on an animal because they tend to hide deep down in the fur so they can always be close to their food source-the animal's blood.Fleas also are well known to infest carpets so that they can hitch a ride on another host,so it's quite possible that your dogs don't have fleas but your carpet does.Your best bet to buy flea treatment and collars for your dogs and get some of the specific insecticide powder or spray for fleas that infest carpets, furniture etc. at your local vet's and then rent a carpet cleaner and thoroughly shampoo your carpets to remove any trace of them. Also you should wash any clothes that came in possible contact with fleas in very hot water,in order to kill any eggs that may be present.Good Luck. LarryUK
I've not got to the bottom of it yet. It's not fleas as I've not found one. I've ordered some 'foggers' to fill the room with bug killer. I've arranged for my sister to come this week with my partner to gut the house, bath all of our dogs, strip my sofas (loose covers) and take them to the laundrette. I'm waiting for things to be delivered as I ordered things from the net as they're so expensive from shops and vets. I've been cleaning and vacuuming regularly to try and keep whatever it is at bay. I'll let you know. I've just remembered, My young dog and one of my partners dogs have got a little patch each of missing hair on their faces, which indicates mange to me. So we'll see.
