Les Paul tone

Killing Is Heroism

Recommended Posts

I tried searching this and only end up with stuff like how to get tones out of a Les Paul, and not tones like the man Les Paul. I know he had his low impedance pick ups but...I think it'd be impossible to get a Les Paul Recording unless I paid a pretty penny. I know the P90s come close and that was more of what I am looking at. So if I got say...a Les Paul 50s or 60s tribute with the P90s, what would be a good amp or effects pedal to edge closer to that tone?

Good question. Les Paul's sound on records from the 50s would have been achieved partly by putting the guitar straight into the mixing desk or recorder. That's why it is so clean. P90s are good. Then a very clean-sounding amp, probably not too powerful, and some analog reverb and tape-style echo/delay - not a digital delay which is far too hi-fi. Some sort of clean octave up or harmoniser pedal would come in handy too - that would have to be digital.

I'm pretty sure he used pedals in his later live appearances rather than old tape echos though.

Regards!

Hello and welcome to the Forums!

I have a 50's Tribute with P-90s and a Recording. The tonality of these instruments not even close. You can make a Recording sound similiar to an LP with P-90s, but You won't be able to do the opposite.

Strange coincidence! Yesterday night I've plugged in my Recording with the outboard transformer, straight into the amp without effects. I was learning the well-known song, the "Caravan". I was so happy to find out how indentical my tone was to Les Paul's.

By the way: Recording/Personal/Professional Low-Z guitars are still inexpensive these days. It's worth to get one now. Due to their very limited quantities, their price will ramp up in the coming years.

WOW! That's taking a lowly guitar stand to being a beautiful piece of art! Thanks for the link! [thumbup]
